Tasting Notes:

The Yangarra Estate McLaren Vale Shiraz 2022 reflects a near-perfect vintage that captures the harmony between elegance, texture, and regional power for which this estate has become renowned. The season mirrored 2021 with a slightly cooler edge, delivering balanced yields and fruit of outstanding intensity, freshness, and natural acidity. Favourable winter rains, a mild flowering and fruit-set, and a cool ripening period from late January to March created the ideal conditions for slow flavour development and pristine fruit character.

Sourced from six blocks within the Yangarra estate — half grown on ancient sand, half on ironstone — this wine speaks authentically of its Blewitt Springs terroir. The fruit was destemmed, selectively sorted, and fermented with 50% whole berries using wild yeast in open fermenters. Gentle maceration and a hands-off approach preserved purity and finesse, with the wine resting on lees for 13 months in French oak puncheons (20% new, the balance seasoned foudre and 1- to 3-year-old barrels). The result is a Shiraz that merges old-world Rhône sensibility with the unique energy of McLaren Vale.

In the glass, it shimmers a deep crimson-purple. Aromas of violet, plum, blackberry and cracked pepper rise from the glass, threaded with subtle notes of earth, cocoa and spice. The palate is medium-bodied and supple, unfolding layers of dark fruit and savoury undertones balanced by silky tannins and vibrant acidity. It glides long and graceful, displaying both the power and poise that define Yangarra’s signature style.

Rated 95 Points by Marcus Ellis (Halliday Wine Companion), 94 Points by Cassandra Charlick (Winepilot), and 93 Points each by Stuart Knox and Huon Hooke (The Real Review), this release cements its position among Australia’s most refined modern Shiraz expressions.

Pair this elegant Shiraz with slow-roasted lamb shoulder, chargrilled eggplant with tahini, or duck breast with cherry glaze — dishes that echo the wine’s balance of richness, spice, and earthy complexity.

Accolades & Awards:

95 Point Rated Marcus Ellis Halliday Wine Companion

"From six estate blocks, split between ironstone and sand, destemmed with half left as whole berries; élevage in French puncheons, with 25% new and the remainder 1–3-year-old oak. This is remarkably pretty upfront, bursting with red berries and cherries, underneath a bedrock of ferrous minerality – the split of soils writ large – along with baking spices and rosy florals. Trademark Yangarra tannins kick in swiftly and carry the flavours long through a savoury finish. This is charming, but it’s also built for food. Seems like a very fine year for shiraz at this address."

94 Point Rated Cassandra Charlic Winepilot

"Elegant yet wild, with notes of cured meat, red cherries, currants, white florals, pepper berries, and Dutch liquorice... A wine that unfolds slowly and gracefully."

93 Point Rated Stuart Knox The Real Review

"Deep, almost impenetrable ruby red colour. Mulberry, mocha and black olive tapenade aromatics. Rich and dense black and purple fruits fill the senses. It carries serious fruit intensity but as it builds we see layers of ferrous minerals and rosemary undertones. Good length with finely built tannins ensuring a dry finish. Still youthful, and cellaring will be well rewarded."

93 Point Rated Huon Hooke The Real Review

"Bright, deep purple colour; aromas of dark plum and blackberry with a slightly smoked-meaty reductive overtone. The wine is rich and deeply fruit-sweet on the palate. Blackberry conserve. Luscious fruit and abundant soft, powdery tannins."

93 Point Rated Ray Jordan Winepilot

"Combines the generosity of shiraz with a slightly rustic dried herb character that seems a part of the Blewitt Springs DNA. The fruit was carefully massaged through older French oak and foudre to allow its essential characters to emerge without compromise. Bright and lively with a typical energy."

93 Point Rated Ned Goodwin Halliday Wine Companion

"An exuberantly floral, full-bodied shiraz, with the inherent elegance of Blewitt Springs, a grand cru in local parlance. Iodine, saddle leather, dried lavender and lilacs, with notes of boysenberry and cream. From biodynamically grown grapes. Drink or hold. Screw cap."

93 Point Rated Mike Bennie WBM

"A distinct offering that delivers intense flavours of blackberry, plum and licorice, accented by earthy undertones and game meat savouriness dashed through. Medium bodied with grippy granitic tannins for structure with some peppery elements and a dose of dried herbs woven as a lingering presence. A distinctly savoury style, a little out of the box, but worthy."
