Tasting Notes:

A lovely fruit-forward spicy cool climate shiraz. The fruit aromas are berry and plum complimented by pepper and star anise spices. There’s complexity on the bouquet but pretty fruit characters are foremost at the moment. The palate is full of drive: a lovely combination of spiciness, complex flavours and fine tannins for a long finish.

Technical:

The Indigo Vineyard is located 12km’s from Beechworth in the foothills of the Victorian Alps. Wine has been produced in the area since 1950 when the Brown Bros vineyard was planted at Everton Hills. The Indigo Vineyard was planted in 1999. The vineyard site is at an elevation of 350 metres. This was a very challenging vintage with the La Nina weather pattern delivering well above average rainfall. The other impacts were numerous late Spring cold events, relatively cool temperatures, big summer storms and high humidity. The ongoing rain kept the team on the tractors with sprays, trimming and leaf removal. There was also lots of walking through the vineyard cutting out affected bunches. The conditions meant that picking for the 2022 vintage was some 4 weeks later than the past few years. Vintage 2022 began on February 21 and finished on 14 April. The Shiraz was pressed with a combination of whole bunch (10%) and whole berries. It was vinified on skins for 14 days in small open fermenters with pump overs and hand plunging twice a day. The wine was pressed when dry and finished fermentation in barrels after undergoing malolactic fermentation in wood. The Shiraz matured in French oak puncheons and barriques (30% new oak) and was racked twice during 20 months in oak.

Accolades & Awards:

93 Point Rated Jeni Port Halliday Wine Companion

"A very different shiraz to the previous vintage release: lower in alcohol, overall ripeness and generally a little more circumspect. Aussie bush notes, pepper and briar scents with black fruits, plum and spice. There's an almost unassuming elegance to this wine, with beautifully presented red and black fruits studded in spices and black pepper notes. The palate is really fluid, polished and even, with tannins running long and fine. Very smart indeed."
