The Petaluma Project Co Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon 2014 is a rare museum-release project wine sourced from the distinguished Evans and Sharefarmers Vineyards at the northern end of Coonawarra, produced by a 5 Red Star Halliday-rated winery renowned for crafting some of the region’s greatest Cabernets. The 2014 season delivered a tiny crop due to cool, wet conditions leading into flowering, yet the low yields resulted in berries packed with exceptional concentration. Hand-picked fruit arrived at the original Petaluma winery in the Piccadilly Valley—its final vintage before the move to Woodside—where it was destemmed, crushed and chilled into traditional heading-down-board fermenters. A small parcel was left as whole berries to undergo carbonic maceration, contributing lifted ripe berry notes and supple tannins before being blended back after pressing. Fermentation unfolded over two weeks before the wine was transferred to French oak barriques, 60% new, with maturation carefully monitored over 24 months until the ideal point where fruit purity and oak integration aligned.
In the glass the wine shows deep colour and classic cool-climate Coonawarra character, opening with brooding dark fruits, cassis and black olive intertwined with mocha, subtle earthiness and fine graphite spice. The palate is medium-bodied yet powerful, layered with blackcurrant, dark plum and hints of tobacco, framed by chalky, fine-grain tannins that give line, structure and age-worthy persistence. Its savoury depth and seamless texture highlight both vineyard pedigree and meticulous winemaking, creating a wine equally rewarding now or capable of ageing gracefully for 10+ years.
Perfectly suited to hearty Italian dishes—think osso buco, slow-braised ragu, wood-fired pizza with truffle salami or rich lasagne—the wine also complements chargrilled lamb, mushroom risotto and aged hard cheeses where the tannin structure and dark fruit profile shine.
