Tasting Notes:

A true reflection of Barossa excellence, the St Hugo Barossa Valley Grenache Shiraz Mataro 2024 captures the finesse, depth, and harmony that define this iconic region. Crafted from fruit sourced across five exceptional Barossa vineyards — including two blocks of old-vine Grenache (aged 60 and 80 years) — this wine blends history, artistry, and modern winemaking precision into a single expressive release.

The Grenache brings lifted floral perfume and raspberry brightness, Shiraz contributes body and plush dark fruit richness, and Mataro adds earthy spice, structure, and savoury length. Each component was vinified separately, with varied techniques including carbonic maceration, whole-bunch fermentation (25%), and traditional open-top fermenters to maximise complexity. Maturation in old French oak puncheons for seven months allowed texture and fruit purity to shine, while individual barrel tasting ensured only the finest parcels made the final blend.

The result is an aromatic and textural masterpiece — red and black fruits entwined with Turkish delight, raisin, and toasted almond nuances. The palate is ripe yet refined, balancing juicy Grenache sweetness with Shiraz’s power and Mataro’s earthy structure. Soft, rich tannins guide a lingering finish of spice and subtle oak.

Exceptional with slow-roasted lamb shoulder, duck with cherry glaze, or charcuterie platters, this GSM also pairs beautifully with hard cheeses and Mediterranean dishes, making it as versatile as it is luxurious.

The 2024 vintage has already achieved critical acclaim, earning Trophy for “Best Grenache Blend” at the Royal Queensland Wine Awards, alongside 96 Points & Top of Class Gold Medals at both the Royal Queensland and Royal Adelaide Wine Shows, and a 94 Point rating from Ken Gargett (Wine Pilot).

A sophisticated yet approachable Barossa blend that proudly upholds St Hugo’s legacy of elegance and intensity — destined to evolve gracefully over the next decade.

"As ever, the St Hugo range, which picks the eyes out of regions, varieties and blends, provides us with some stellar drinking. This famous Barossa red blend is youthful, but it comes from such a fine vintage and is so seductive and generous, that it is compelling drinking. A crimson purple colour, the nose is just a combination of beautiful fragrances. Fresh cherries, chocolate/cherry notes, florals, violets and blueberries. If that does not sound enticing, then perhaps gorgeous reds are not for you. Seductive texture and silky tannins, this is finely balanced and offering excellent length. There is a little touch of nutty oak on the finish. Great drinking now, but it has at least another five to eight years of pleasure ahead of it."

93 Point Rated - Dave Brookes James Halliday Wine Companion

"Super-bright purple/crimson in the glass. This grenache, shiraz, mataro triptych show plenty of bouncy, bunchy plum, cranberry and red berry fruits with a distinct ginger-spiced edge. There are high tones of citrus blossom and raspberry pastry with a base of medina spice, earth and red licorice. It's a distinctly modern take on the GSM style and, with its gentle tannin and bright acidity, it's a very easy drink with a savoury twist at the tail end."
