Tasting Notes:

Monolith Vintners Monolithic Old Vine Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon 2013

Deep ruby crimson colour. A massive intense and enticing nose, the initial hit of exotic fruit once allowed to breathe will mellow. Black berry and dark cherry are the dominant character whilst varietal character of cassis is also very evident. The French oak influence is still evident despite its age and highlights the quality of the new large format oak used. Concentrated, tremendous texture and depth are hallmarks of this wine. The great richness which comes from black fruits flavours is immense, brooding and dense. The age of the wine is evident through notes of earth and leather saddle although the fruit is just so potent that they are just a side show. This style of wine requires decanting and time to breathe to soften prior to consuming although will be cellared prior to release the wine has the fruit, alcohol and tannin structure to ensure cellaring for many more years where it will continue to evolve.

Basedows Of Barossa Cabernet Sauvignon 2019

Deep red in colour with purple hues. This wine exhibits aromas of blackberry, eucalypt and a touch of mint. The palate is full and luscious with flavours of blackberries and plums. The palate is full flavoured with soft tannins and rounded oak. A medium to full bodied wine which has good length and is an excellent example of Barossa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon.

Alexander King Cameron Heritage Reserve Limestone Coast Shiraz 2020

Black core with red brick hue. Beautifully fragrant nose with alluring black berry, blue berry notes with oak and Chinese five spice adding the complexity. The palate is long and luscious displaying fleshy fruit flavours highlighting the high-quality fruit used for this wine. Blackberry characters, which will enable this wine to age well, along with some blue berries, licorice, black pepper, and dusty leather interwoven across the palate with fine tannins lingering on the finish. Will drink well now although will age well and develop more complexity over the next 8+ years potentially.

Grant Burge Miamba Barossa Valley Shiraz 2019

The wine has a bright red and purple hue with depth and intensity. While overflowing with aromas of blood plum, raspberry and blackberries, it balances perfectly with liquorice, oak spice and a hint of vanilla sweetness. The palate mirrors the aromas, with bright fruit flavours of raspberry and blackberry complemented with vanilla sweetness. The rolling dark chocolate tannins and subtle oak spice carry through the entire length of the palate, finishing with a long lingering spice and subtle vanilla sweetness.

Clare Hills Clare Valley Cabernet Merlot 2018 By Pikes

Medium to deep red colour with enticing aromas of cassis, black cherries, tobacco initially followed by hints of cedary oak and mint.  The medium bodied palate is rich and quite supple with good concentration of dark fruit mentioned above plus little of the cedar. Perfect with a salumi plate and some pecorino cheese.

Olssen Of Watervale The Olssen Six Clare Valley Red 2017

Black with currant red flashes. Fragrant nose displaying sweet red berries with plum and mulberry highlights. Spicy and fruit driven with freshly cut plums along with dark cherry flavours. Soft, savoury tannins and good acid add structure and length to this voluptuous wine. Well-integrated oak provides the perfect backbone with tannins and acid all melting into one another.

1838 Reserve Grenache Shiraz Mourvedre 2019

The Grenache Shiraz Mourvedre blend combines the bold, clean "strawberries and cream" of Grenache with the bold pepper and spice of Shiraz and the earthy depth and soft tannin of Mourvedre. A classic medium bodied blend, vibrant crimson in colour, with a sweet nose and flavours of cherry and dark plum with rounded tannins to follow.

Conquest Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon 2018

Deep brick red hues. The palate has upfront fruit with plum and black currant being the dominant characters. There’s a hint of mint, toasty tannins and a lingering oak finish. Vintage Coonawarra Cab with cherries, plum and black currant.

Kopparossa Coonawarra Reserve Shiraz 2018

Deep, earthy red with purple and plum coloured hues. Toasty, spicy, cherry plum, chocolate with a hint of mint. Velvety, ripe fleshy cherry fruit flavours with a lingering astringency- from firm supple grape and oak tannins. Still a youthful wine that will develop into a bigger, richer, complex individual, as time goes on.

The Colonial Estate Explorateur Barossa Valley Sparkling Shiraz Nv

Deep purple to crimson red. Elegant and lively with rich aromas of blackberry, cherry and spice with hints of licorice and oak filling out the nose. The palate vibrant and balanced with soft fruit driven flavour initially with blackberries, plums and licorice notes all combining on the creamy palate. An approachable mid palate, which is full-flavored, while the hint of tannin and fresh lively finish make this one of the most moreish wines we have created.

Technical:

Monolith Vintners Monolithic Old Vine Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon 2013

The vintage indicated early the supreme quality that would be produced by the dry grown, old vines that yielded the fruit we isolated for this special once off trial. Our commitment to making French influenced Iconic Australian wine lead us to the Coonawarra region and we felt our style would best benefit from fruit from this region. We hand-picked the fruit and it was transported to the winery where it was gently de-stemmed into concrete open top fermenters. It was then carefully nurtured for 7 days on skins with pump overs occurring twice daily, varying in duration and intensity. When primary fermentation was almost complete, the wine was drained from the skins and the must is gently basket pressed for 8 hours. It is then run directly into new French Puncheon barrels (500 litres) where it spent the next 60 months of its life and we believe is a world first for barrel aging such a wine. The wine was then blended, and only the best barrels selected to be bottled without the use of filtration or fining. Aged in bottle before just 500 six packs were released. A wonderful example of traditional French style Cabernet Sauvignon with our individual Australian twist which will stand the test of time, ensure it is allowed to breathe for at least 1-2 hours prior to consuming.

Basedows Of Barossa Cabernet Sauvignon 2019

A mild winter and a drier than normal spring led to an early flowering and fruit set for the Barossa vineyards. A hot start to summer meant that ripening occurred early and the vintage started on the 9th February with all varieties ripening in short succession. The conditions led to an excellent growing season with the reds full of density, colour and rich flavour. The Cabernet grapes were the last variety harvested and despite lower than average yields, the quality of the wines from the 2018 Barossa vintage is set to be exceptional.

Alexander King Cameron Heritage Reserve Limestone Coast Shiraz 2020

The fruit was selected from a single vineyard with a northeast facing slope and picked at optimum ripeness and transported to the winery and immediately crushed. Following on from this we fermented the juice on skins for 12 days to maximise colour and flavour extraction. The skins were then pressed gently and the pressings pumped back with the free-run juice. The wine was then fermented over a week then allowed to settle and was then racked off lees. The wine underwent malolactic fermentation in barrel and then was aged in the same barrels for 14 months. The wine was blended and prepared for bottling with minimal filtration.

Viking Odins Honour Barossa Valley Shiraz 2017

This wine is sourced from an old dry grown vineyard with vines dating back to the early 1900’s from what we consider one of the Barossa Valley’s finest blocks. The growing season was near on perfect. An ideal vintage, which gave us the benefit of perfectly, ripened fruit. The smooth flow of vintage allowed us to select specific fruit parcels and allowed us to define the wine as much in the vineyard as the winery. These grapes are brought into the winery, and crushed into old vats where the fermentation is initiated by “wild” yeasts found on the grape skins. Careful extraction and short post fermentation maceration is followed by soft pressing. The wine is transferred into brand new oak barrels where the malolactic fermentation is completed before racking and maturation for a further 24 months in barrels.  A careful assemblage and barrel selection is followed by minimal filtration and bottling then further aging prior to release.

Clare Hills Clare Valley Cabernet Merlot 2018 By Pikes

The grapes for this wine were machine harvested, transported to the winery, de-stemmed into open fermenters and cold soaked for three days before fermentation began. The wine was pumped over twice daily during ferment for approx 7 days and this was followed by draining, pressing and then maturation in French oak casks for 14 months before racking and blending. The wine was stabilised and lightly filtered prior to bottling.

Olssen Of Watervale The Olssen Six Clare Valley Red 2017

Carefully selected parcels of fruit were selected from the Watervale region in the Clare Valley. We picked in the evening and decided to macerate over night and crush the fruit early the next morning. The wine was fermented in older French barrels, and left to age in oak before we selected only the best barrels of the vintage for inclusion in the final six blend then the wine was blended and bottled with minimal fining or filtration.

Conquest Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon 2018

Select parcels of fruit were sourced from the iconic terra rossa soils of Coonawarra for this wine. We picked the fruit at optimum ripeness in the cool of the night in order to retain the fruits natural acidity and of course the regional flavours and aromatics that the Coonawarra is world famous for. The wine was transferred to the winery where it was hand reared with extended time on skins. Hand plunging, cool preferment maceration and the use of select yeast, coupled with long post ferment maceration on skins followed the traditional techniques more often used in French winemaking. The wine was aged in new and old oak then select barrels were chosen for the final blend prior to bottling.

The Colonial Estate Explorateur Barossa Valley Sparkling Shiraz Nv

The vineyards that make up Explorateur are based in the northwestern Barossa Valley. This is a belt of land/terroir that runs from just to the northwest of Tanunda – Marananga, Greenock, Moppa, Ebenezer, and through to Stockwell, just north of Nuriootpa. Cropping levels are kept low to ensure fruit flavour is focus. This Shiraz is created from a blend of vintages, primary fermentation is in stainless steel vats followed by extended barrel fermentation on lees to build complexity and richness. The parcels were blended followed by secondary fermentation which gives the wine its sparkle. Should be drinking well now and over the next 6 or so years.
