A year after his father died, farmer’s son John Walker opened a grocery store in Kilmarnock, 30 minutes drive south of Glasgow, in 1820. John successfully blended and sold local whiskies, his son Alexander established Johnnie Walker in 1867 by launching ‘Old Highland Whisky’ and created the iconic square bottle to reduce breakage on its journeys by ship around the globe. Alexander’s sons George and Alexander II launched the iconic coloured labelled whiskies in 1909. Johnnie Walker Red Label is a 40% ABV blend of peaty whiskies from Scotland’s west and lighter-style whiskies from the East Coast.
