Tasting Notes:

Hidden throughout the Barossa, a patchwork of tiny, old and much loved vineyards shyly bear bunches of exquisite Shiraz. The best of this fruit, from vines that are among the oldest in the world, is carefully selected with one wine in mind – Yalumba

The Octavius Old Vine Shiraz, a wine that has established a reputation as one of Australia’s iconic Shiraz.Subtlety with complexity; this wine opens with brooding sweet dark fruits of plums, cherries, blueberries and anise that gradually evolve into the alluring spice of cloves, dark coffee and chocolate. A palate of elegance, yet with great depth and concentration. This is a very stylish wine, showing an amazing brightness and freshness combined with mouth-filling textures. The wine has purity of fruit, balanced acidity and long grainy tannins that complete the package for long term cellaring.

Technical:

Sourced 83% from the Barossa Valley and 17% from Eden Valley with an average vine age of 53 years. The Barossa Valley Shiraz provides richness, density and concentration, while the Eden Valley Shiraz provides subtle exotic aromatics and seamless palate structure.

The 2010 growing season began well with good periods of winter and spring rainfall, combined with periods of warm to hot spring weather. Very windy conditions prevailed during the flowering period, which caused low crops to be set. However, the crops that remained managed to ripen to full flavour ripeness. Vintage 2010 has produced red wines that are deep in colour, have lifted aromatics and are packed full of flavour.

Matured for 20 months in 35% new French and American octaves, 25% 1 year old French & Hungarian hogsheads & barriques, balance in older American & French barriques and hogsheads. Will continue to improve in the cellar for 15++ years.

Accolades & Awards:

97 Points Huon Hooke

Very deep, very youthful purple/red colour; cedar and sandalwood-like aromas, largely from oak, with spicy and subtle confit fruit notes beneath. A superb bouquet. The palate is again, like the 2009, a more elegantly crafted style, with intensity yet also elegance and softness, subtlety and none of the mouth-crunching tannins of early vintages. Indeed, it's almost light in comparison to what's gone before. Beautifully balanced and approachable already. A very fine wine.

94 Points James Halliday Wine Companion

Bright crimson-purple; it's impossible to escape the clutches of the oak in this wine, but it is also true of the black fruits. I don't follow the logic of compromising on cork quality in a wine at this price, as is the case here. Having got that off my chest, there is a swirl of blackberry, blackcurrant and licorice on the bouquet and palate (plus oak), the tannins are plush, round and nicely balanced. In its own idiom, a very smart wine.
