Tasting Notes:

Pale gold with green highlights. Intense aromas of apricots, cardamom, white pepper and fresh ginger. Lifted ginger spice is layered on the palate with mineral, sourdough-like texture, apricots and almond savouriness. The hallmark Viognier texture of the palate is clearly evident in this wine. It is complex while at the same time shows purity and restraint that will unwind slowly in the glass and take the imbiber on a sensory journey.

Technical:

The Virgilius is our flagship white wine. After more than 40 years of working with this variety, the cool elevated slopes of Eden Valley has proved its place in the world as one of the great homes of Viognier. Handpicked and wild fermented in old French oak, this is wine with layers of richness, complexity, fine textures and flavours. After more than 40 years we believe Eden Valley has proved its place as one of the great homes of Viognier. The ‘new’ clones, imported by the Yalumba Nursery, are starting to mature and bear fruit that we can compare to each other and our established vineyards. Half of this blend comes from the oldest vines planted in 1980, the balance from a neighbouring vineyard of the same clone that was planted in 1995. The Eden Valley region experienced below average rainfall during winter and the growing season. This, combined with a windy spring, led to below average crops being set. Warm summer days have developed intense flavours, while cool nights led to lovely natural acidity, both perfect for ripening flavours and maintaining freshness.

Accolades & Awards:

97 Point Rated - Dave Brookes James Halliday's Wine Companion
"Yalumba has firmly positioned itself at the pointy end of the Australian viognier hierarchy with its Virgilius. It's a style more in line with the wines of the northern Rhône than the usual overtly apricotty numbers we often see from the Antipodes. Steely and textural with savoury-shaped stone fruits and a light dusting of apricot and citrus fruits, along with notes of marzipan, dried honey and light ginger spice. It boasts a savoury, stony palate shape and a light tweak of phenolics on the finish, which is fruit-pure and enduring."

95 Point Rated - Campbell Mattinson The Wine Front
"Power and control. This wine nails it from every angle. The chalk, the apricot kernels, the wood notes, the juice, the smoke; everything combines here to both impressive and delicious effect. It’s taut through the finish but the power of flavour is both quite something, and an unstoppable force. Steely, that’s the word I’m looking for; it’s steel ripping through stonefruit, with precision. Ripping wine."

94 Point Rated - Angus Hughson Wine Pilot
"An absolutely cracking vintage of Virgilius here and in the kind of form that makes it undoubtedly one of the country’s best. Pale golden in colour, there is fantastic aromatic focus and detail; apricot skin and dried florals with savoury cashew and subtle but high quality French oak all with pinpoint balance. It’s then dry, mouthfilling and quite textural but also reserved with a backbone of silky acidity and a savoury, nutty fruit profile with only gentle touches of classic apricot notes. Fantastic underlying fruit power then drives a long and engaging finish making one hell of a food-friendly wine for anything well matched to high-end Chardonnay."

93 Point Rated - Huon Hooke The Real Review
"Medium to full yellow-gold colour. The bouquet is savoury with nutty barrel-ferment and toasty development starting up, with more varietal fruit aromas beneath, hinting at spices, apricot, ginger and honey, the palate full-bodied and rich, with a long carry and a trace of alcohol adding a little astringency and heat to the aftertaste."
