The Struie is a wonderfully aromatic and deeply concentrated wine produced from the harmonious combination of both regions, delivering layers of dark chocolate characters and defining structure. Nuances of plum, black and blueberries, violets and hidden spice characters all further enhance the natural elegance and tension from old vines. The Struie will reward for 15-20 years.
The name Struie originates from a mountain in the rugged highlands of north-east Scotland, which overlooks Torbreck forest near Inverness. The view from the Struie down across the Dornoch Firth is as inspiring as that of the Valley floor from the Barossa Ranges. While the Eden Valley region is most associated with the white wine variety, Riesling, it also produces elegant, tautly structured Shiraz which is highly prized by winemakers.
This Torbreck Shiraz cuvée is a skilful blend of fruit from a single vineyard Eden Valley Shiraz and old vine Shiraz from the Barossa Valley’s Western Ranges – a marriage of elegance and intensity. The growing season was defined by a continuously warm to hot summer with no effective rainfall, wind and hail at flowering, and followed with three major frosts - resulting in an earlier and much smaller harvest than average. These tough conditions produced smaller clusters of intensely dark berries with thick fleshy skins contrasted against brown mature stalks. Whilst yields were down, once these vineyards were fermenting in our cellar the concentration of colour, tannin and aroma of the 2019 vintage was revealed.

"Very deep, bright, youthful purple/red colour. Rich, ripe blood plums to sniff. Subtle flecks of fresh-turned earth and ironstone. A hint of licorice. It's full-bodied and fleshy, soft and supple, with lovely extract and weight in the mouth without heaviness. There is concentration and drive in the mid-palate, and a solid tannin grip to conclude—all in balance. Black fruits, licorice and dark chocolate linger on and on."

"From vines averaging 50yo, 92% from Barossa Valley western ranges, 8% from Eden Valley. Matured 20 months in 20% new French oak barrels. A show stopper. Profound, luminescent black purple. A compact, dense singularity of satsuma plum, blackberry and licorice, framed in a confidently hewn shell of fine, mineral tannins and well-executed dark chocolate and coffee bean oak. Coiled up tight, all it asks for is time to unravel and build on the finish."

"Torbreck's 2018 The Struie is a 75-25 blend of Barossa Valley and Eden Valley fruit. All Shiraz, aged 20 months in mainly used French oak (there's 15% new oak), it boasts an opulent, nearly creamy mouthfeel, ample weight and richness and a lingering, supple finish. Those structural elements all guide notes of camphor, grilled beef, plummy fruit, vanilla and cola easily across the full-bodied palate, making this a wine that's deceptively easy to drink, despite its concentration and complexity. It should drink well for 10-15 years."
