The wine is a pure expression of Grenache. Aromas of strawberry, dark cherries (almost Cherry Ripe), cedar-spice with hints of sandalwood. The palate is silky smooth and vibrant, redolent with red cherries, red plums, blood orange and chocolate. The finish is long, expressive and youthful. Walton 1946 Grenache is drinking superbly now, however will reward careful cellaring for a further 15 years.

"It is fantastic to see the mighty Clare Valley getting in on the action with the rise of Grenache. As expected from Kilikanoon, it is a rich and bold style but also carries with it an impressive core of savoury fruits that provide very serious impact and appeal. Deeply coloured for Grenache, it is dark and moody with dense layers of slate, roasted meats and tar well supported by blackberry and cherry fruits. It’s then densely structured with hearty tannins and lashings of dark berry fruits before finishing long and strong. A very impressive Clare Grenache that will get even better with some time in bottle."
95 Point Rated - Aaron Brasher The Real Review
"Youthful, vibrant red in the glass. Exotic aromas of five spice, cola, blueberry, dried herbs and red cherry. Flavours are mid-weighted, rich and fleshy. There’s plenty of red and blue fruit drive, supple and caressing tannins and bouncy, zingy acidity keeping all in check. Lovely, expressive Grenache here, layers of flavour and a decent whack of complexity."
Planted in 1946, the Walton old block Grenache is a monument to the history of the Clare Valley. These dry-grown bush vines are planted in terra rossa soils allowing excellent drainage at an elevation between 370 and 390 metres. The westerly aspect and east/west facing rows ensures the vines are able to soak up the late summer sun while avoiding the harsh conditions of the Clare mid summer.
Hand-picked, the grapes are carefully transported to the winery in half tonne bins where they are hand sorted and destemmed prior to fermentation in open vats. Traditional techniques with minimal intervention are used to ensure that the vineyard fully expresses itself such as hand plunging and basket pressing into large 500 litre oak “Puncheons” . This focused and tender care ensures that one of the great legacies of the region remains alive today for your continued enjoyment.
