A blend of shiraz, grenache, mataro and viognier, the 2017 Henschke 'Henry's Seven' is again in cracking form offering lifted aromas of plum, red currant and blue and black berry fruits that are joined by floral nuances of violets and black pepper spice. The round, supple palate is filled with juicy blue and red fruits, spiced plum, liquorice and notes of crushed tarragon, with beautifully textured svelte tannins and a long, peppery finish.
The Henschke family have been making wine since Johann Henschke planted his first vineyard in South Australia’s Eden Valley in the early 1860's. Today, fifth-generation winemaker Stephen Henschke and his viticulturist wife Prue are recognised around the world for their exceptional quality wines, innovation and sustainability practices in their vineyards. Henschke 'Henry's Seven' is a tribute to Henry Evans who planted the first vineyard of seven acres at Keyneton in 1853. He quickly developed a reputation for producing the best wines in the southern colony.
73% shiraz, 17% grenache and 5% each of mataro and viognier
94 Points James Halliday Wine Companion
"73% shiraz, 17% grenache and 5% each of mataro and viognier, the shiraz co-fermented with viognier, the grenache and mataro separately, matured in French hogsheads (10% new) for 10 months. The wine has a zesty freshness that is normally associated with white wines, but without any suggestion of green fruit, just the vintage. There's every reason to drink this now while it's bigger brothers go through their limbering up exercises."
93 Points The Wine Front
"Contains (75%) shiraz, grenache, mataro and a cool 5% of (co-fermented) viognier. Such a polished release. So run with fruit flavour. So spice-drenched. It’s floral, it’s blueberried, it has the brightness of raspberry and the bass of anise. There’s warmth here but it’s well in check; there’s a whisper of meatiness but it leans clearly to the floral side. Joyous red. If I saw it, I’d buy it"
