Tasting Notes:

Koha Marlborough Pinot Noir 2015

On the nose this wine displays dark raspberry and plums, with hints of dried herbs and mocha. The dark berry fruits carry through to the pallet. The tannins are soft and velvety, supported by the use of subtle oak.

Koha Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2018

Pungent aromas of citrus, nettles and sage, with lively passionfruit and floral notes adding allure and complexity. This wine delivers delicious citrus and stonefruit flavours with a crisp, refreshing finish that is synonymous with Marlborough. Koha Sauvignon Blanc is the perfect partner for fresh seafood and shellfish. Try this vibrant wine with littleneck or diamond shell clams in broth for a delicious and authentic taste of Marlborough.

Grigori Heathcote Shiraz 2017

Dark ruby red with purple hues. Dark berries, violets, pepper and a touch of spice. The palate provides layers of dark berry fruit and white pepper with a finely well managed touch of spice on the finish. Soft velvet like tannins fill the senses while elegant oak provides frame work to this rich and flavoursome Shiraz.

Grigori Clare Valley Riesling 2017

Bright green straw in colour. Beautiful floral aromas are off set with lemon and lime characters. The palate displays intense citrus fruit characters of fresh lemon and lime along with hints of delicate florals. Crisp acid appears on the mid-palate, balanced by good fruit presence. The finish is crisp and clean with a fine mineral backbone with layer upon layer of persistent fruit which keeps pushes through.

Clare Hills Clare Valley Riesling 2018 By Neil Pike

Pale green/straw in appearance with typical Clare Valley Riesling characters on show, including  citrus, talc and gentle floral notes. The palate is fresh, dry and mouth filling - the well balanced acidity ensuring a crisp, dry finish. While this Clare Valley Riesling is delicious served well chilled as a refreshing summer drink, it is also great food wine when served.

The Colonial Estate Envoy Barossa Valley Grenache Shiraz Mourvedre 2015

Crimson red. Perfumed smoky aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry and graphite.  The palate starts off with some sweet dark berry flavours but then takes a darker turn, notes of bitter chocolate, black cardamom and espresso are all evident. A serious style of this traditional Southern Rhone blend its seriously structured but has some obvious concentration and deep, sweet fruit.

Richmond Bridge Tasmanian Pinot Noir 2017

Lifted sweet red cherry and wild strawberry with hints of savoury spice. Ripe dark cherry and raspberry and strawberry all reveal themselves on the front palate. Lively dark clove and cinnamon spices add depth to the mid palate and also a hint of licorice gives further definition and length. The tannins are supple, fine and silky smooth offering mid palate richness and well-balanced acidity provides the back palate with a perfect kick.

Normans Old Vine McLaren Vale Shiraz 2017

Deep purple with a red hue. Showing its youth at this early stage of its development raspberry, plum and confectionery notes reflect this although mixed spice; oak and underlying Christmas pudding give further characters of age. Currently its highly concentration with raspberry and plum playing leading roles. Some lovely spice appears when allowed to breathe while the dusty fine-grained tannins and oak provide a bit of luxury and softness and some earthy characters of bark and leather give an interesting side note. It is a complex fruit driven style with a wonderful backbone of oak and tannin that will reward those who allow it to breathe prior to drinking.

Wild Horn Wines The Raging Bull Langhorne Creek Shiraz 2017

Deep brooding red black colour. Distinct varietal and regional characters of lifted white pepper with dark berry fruit and oak tying it all together. Dark berry fruit flavours lead you into secondary flavours of plum, and savoury spices. Its well-balanced structure is highlighted with subtle tannins and well integrated but not dominant oak character.

The Colonial Estate Explorateur Barossa Valley Sparkling Shiraz Nv

Deep purple to crimson red. Elegant and lively with rich aromas of blackberry, cherry and spice with hints of licorice and oak filling out the nose. The palate vibrant and balanced with soft fruit driven flavour initially with blackberries, plums and licorice notes all combining on the creamy palate. An approachable mid palate, which is full-flavored, while the hint of tannin and fresh lively finish make this one of the most moreish wines we have created.

Technical:

Koha Marlborough Pinot Noir 2015

Cane pruned on VSP trellising. The Southern Valleys of Marlborough are now firmly established as the premium Pinot Noir sub region, without question.

Revered for its rich clay soils, cool nights and extremely warm days, the Southern Valleys are naturally formed north facing pockets of Pinot Noir perfection.

The ripe fruit was picked and then cold soaked for 3-5 days before being allowed to start by indigenous ferment. Hand plunged 2-4 times a day as required.

The wine was left on skins to extract flavour, colour and tannin for 7-10 days post ferment. Aged in a mix of oak barrels and stainless steel tanks for 9 months to undergo malo-lactic fermentation and allow the tannins to soften and the oak to integrate.

Koha Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2018

Both vineyards are cane pruned on VSP trellising. The soils of the lower Wairau Valley Home Block give us ripe, complex flavours and pungent aromatics. While the naturally low cropping Redwood Hills Awatere Vineyard provides fruit with elegance, minerality and length.

The fruit was harvested in the cool of the morning and transferred to the winery where it underwent temperature controlled fermentation in stainless steel tanks using carefully selected yeast cultures. Post-ferment maturation on fine lees gives the wine a refined texture to compliment the exuberant aromatics.

Clare Hills Clare Valley Riesling 2018 By Neil Pike

The grapes for this wine were both machine and hand harvested, then transported to the winery, crushed, chilled and pressed as soon as possible prior to the juice being clarified by cold settling. It was then inoculated with a neutral, pure yeast culture and fermentation carried out in stainless steel temperature controlled tanks for on average 25 days. The wine was stabilised, blended and then filtered prior to bottling in June 2018.

The Colonial Estate Envoy Barossa Valley Grenache Shiraz Mourvedre 2015

Envoy is probably the most European in style wine that we make in Australia and has been confused from time to time with a wine from the Southern Rhone. As ever, the grapes are picked and given a French twist in their winemaking to deliver something slightly different. Fermentation is French for up to two-thirds of the wine made the rest vinified in a more standard Australian way. Aged in oak for 12 months then in bottle for an additional 12 months prior to release.

Richmond Bridge Tasmanian Pinot Noir 2017

The low yielding 2017 vintage resulted in great fruit concentration and in turn high quality wines were produced. Selected batches of Pinot Noir from select vineyards were picked over a three-week period. All batches were destemmed and were wild fermented in small open top fermenters. Gentle plunging and pump over techniques, combined with warm fermentations, ensure bright freshly fruit characters. After pressing, the wine underwent malolactic fermentation in old French oak and stainless steel.

Normans Old Vine McLaren Vale Shiraz 2017

Normans Wines is one of the oldest and most respected family names in Australian winemaking. Since 1853, when Jesse Norman planted his first vines in Adelaide, Normans Wines has developed a reputation for premium award winning Australian wines. Normans Wines is one of Australia’s founding winemakers.

The unseasonable rainfall through the summer months of 2016 delayed the onset of veraison and consequently harvesting of the fruit, with our pick pushed back a month later in 2017. The drier weather pattern experienced in March and April produced cool nights and warm days – ideal for both accelerating ripening and suppressing fungal disease. Predominantly mild summer temperatures and a further 79mm of rain in January delayed ripening and the vines continued to show no signs of stress. All this combined for an ideal slow and steady vintage. Fruit was hand selected from the two same vineyards as 2016 then shipped to the winery and worked through the destemmer, the fruit was crushed and had a few days cold soaking, we allowed natural yeast fermentation and used a careful regime of plunging and drained and returns to get the right balance of extraction. The wine was carefully pressed after 10 days on skins and allowed to complete malolactic fermentation prior to barrel aging then selected barrels were bottled with minimal fining or filtration.

Wild Horn Wines The Raging Bull Langhorne Creek Shiraz 2017

Picked and transported to winery where after crushing it was fermented in open top fermenters then was aged with select older fine grained American and French oak. The parcels of fruit were assembled based on their ability to create a wine which is regionally and varietally correct and has profound fruit flavour, complexity and structure.

Although drinking well upon release this wine will reward with 4+ years in the cellar.

The Colonial Estate Explorateur Barossa Valley Sparkling Shiraz Nv

The vineyards that make up Explorateur are based in the northwestern Barossa Valley. This is a belt of land/terroir that runs from just to the northwest of Tanunda – Marananga, Greenock, Moppa, Ebenezer, and through to Stockwell, just north of Nuriootpa. Cropping levels are kept low to ensure fruit flavour is focus. This Shiraz is created from a blend of vintages, primary fermentation is in stainless steel vats followed by extended barrel fermentation on lees to build complexity and richness. The parcels were blended followed by secondary fermentation which gives the wine its sparkle.

Should be drinking well now and over the next 6 or so years.

Accolades & Awards:

Koha Marlborough Pinot Noir 2015

Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate

The 2015 Koha Pinot Noir has a pale ruby-purple colour and nose of fresh cranberries, raspberries and dried Provence herbs with a waft of lavender. The medium-bodied palate offers plenty youthful red berry flavours with fine grained tannins and a lively backbone, finishing with a pleasant herbal lift.

4 Stars Raymond Chan

Even ruby-red colour, paler on the edge. The nose is soft with red cherry fruit aromas melded with fresh and dried herbs, unfolding red floral and raspberry notes with hints of liquorice and spices. Medium-full bodied, the palate has sweet and lively flavours of red cherry and berry fruit entwined with soft herb, liquorice and spice notes. The flavours are gently mouthfilling and supported by light, fine-grained tannin structure with balanced acidity. This has sweetness and energy, and the wine carries to an elegant, lingering finish of red cherries and liquorice. This is a moderately rich, lively Pinot Noir with red cherry, liquorice, herb and spice flavours on a light-structured palate. Match with poultry and pork dishes over the next 4 years. Southern Valleys fruit, 62% from Omaka North and 38% from Benmorven Road, indigenous yeast started and fermented to 14.0% alc., the wines spending 7-10 days on skins post ferment and aged 9 months in oak barrels and stainless-steel tanks.

Koha Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2018

91 Points & 4.5 Star Rated Sam Kim’s Wine Orbit

Bright and fresh, the beautifully fragrant bouquet shows grapefruit, apple, nectarine and lime zest characters. The palate is lively and crisp, offering lovely fruit intensity backed by refreshing acidity, finishing long and very tasty. Up front and flavoursome.

Highly Rated Raymond Chan, Wine Reviewer

Bright, very pale straw colour, near colourless on the rim. The nose is fresh with soft and light aromas of passionfruit, tropical fruits and herbs with a hint of blackcurrant leaf. Dry to taste and medium-bodied, the palate is slender with flavours of passionfruit, nettles, cut-grass and green capsicums. The mouthfeel is refreshing with lacy acidity and the wine flows along a light-textured phenolic line that carries to a moderately long, dry finish. This is a slender Sauvignon Blanc with light passionfruit flavours with nettle and cut-grass notes on a textured palate with fresh acidity. Serve with seafood, salads and vegetables over the next 2 years. Fruit 65% from the Redwood Hills, Awatere and 35% from the ’Home’ vineyard, Wairau Bar, cool-fermented in tank with 5% of hand-picked fruit from the ’Hillside’ block in the Awatere WBP to barrel for indigenous yeast fermentation and 3 months aging on lees.
