McGuigan The Philosophy Cabernet Sauvignon Shiraz 2013
The iconic wine displays lifted aromas of Cassis and blackberries with subtle hints of dried herbs. These attractive blackfruits are further reflected in the palate. The Philosophy is a full-bodied wine with great depth and concentration which lingers. This is held together with velvety tannins giving the wine great structure and longevity of upwards of 10 years with careful cellaring.
Shanahans If Forever Exists Barossa Valley Shiraz 2016
Deep garnet in colour. Profoundly scented with a complex nose of dark chocolate, blackberries, mulberry, fig and spice. There are also suggestions of dried herbs and pencil shavings. The palate reveals a well-balanced wine of massive proportions with plush, velvety structure that’s perfectly in tune with the fruit-forward, yet savoury characters that give it epic persistence. Dark chocolate, mocha and black olive all appear within a bed of chewy tannins and uplifting acid; the finish just goes on and on...
Normans Old Vine Barossa Valley Shiraz 2018
Vivid purple with ruby red hue. Lifted aromas of blackberry fruit are evident initially with milder notes of mulberry and plum fruit overlapping with under lying oak and black pepper. The vineyard source used for this Shiraz blend came together perfectly being sourced from several different blocks each with their own microclimate and individual differing soil types. Medium bodied with vibrant fruit flavours of dark red and black berry while subtle mulberry and cherry hints fill the mid palate. Soft tannins go well with the elegant under lying taste of oak and spice.
The Colonial Estate Exile Barossa Valley Shiraz 2018
Deep Rich and expressive bouquet with black fruits, dark chocolate and mulberries, plum and black olive. Full bodied and highly concentrated fruit with a really plush texture. The flavour concentration is powerful and yet matches with its impeccable balance and elegance. The fruit flavours of plum and black fruits, all work within the framework, which is fleshy and opulent with a chocolate character shining on the mid palate. There is a lovely spicy note along with subtle hint of oak, but this does not dominate given the powerful fruit flavour. The tannins are velvety smooth which when allowed to open up and breathe illustrate the longevity possible with a long dark seductive finish which is in a word mouthwatering.
Clarendon Hills Bakers Gully Syrah 2012
Blackened crimson. Perfumed roast meats and nuances of spice overlay the otherwise liquorice and black currant dominated expression. Its elegant yet full of vibrancy and its youthful vigour entertains the viewer.A long and aromatically scented structure progressively delivers the liquorice and spiced fruit in a persistent fashion. Velvety tannin and balanced acidity echoâs both potential and proposition. Smoothed extract and overall polish ensures immediate satisfaction.
Draytons Family Bellevue Heritage Grand Reserve Hunter Valley Shiraz 2017
This Shiraz is amber red in colour with an attractive fruit aroma of ripe plums, blackberries and subtle oak. The palate is medium bodied, yet exhibits full spicy, peppery flavours with a soft, round tannin finish. This wine has an excellent balance of acid and fruit; it is a great representation from a vintage regarded as one of the best from the Hunter Valley.
Mount Langi Ghiran Billi Billi Shiraz 2017 Export Cork
Bright, deep garnet. Intense, rich red and black fruits, overlayed with dried florals and spice. A layered, generous wine with bounds of aromatic florals and spice, luscious red and black fruits paired with finely structured tannins and mouthwatering acidity.
Normans Chais Clarendon McLaren Vale Shiraz 2016
Deep dark squid ink with youthful purple and red hues. Luscious aromas of ripe blackberry and concentrated cherry are highlighted by nuances of milk chocolate, violet and cassis. The palate is youthfully opulent and potent, with rich dark cherry, blackberry, aniseed, liquorice and earthy leather flavours building through the mid palate before the silky tannins and fresh acid explode which are typical characters of the vintage. This full-bodied Shiraz has a long lingering finish. Enhanced with a shot of espresso like American and French oak.Fermented in stainless steel, small volume fermentors to maintain strong fruit flavour from skins. Hand plunged twice daily for seven days then transferred into American and French oak barrels for the remainder of ferment then spent 14 months to allow full flavour development.
Wynns Coonawarra Estate Black Label Cabernet Sauvignon 2018
Nose of Dark cherry and lavender imbued with underlying dried mint. The 2018 Black Label Cabernet is a combination of dark fruit and finesse. Initially the palate is soft and round, but a fine tannin framework provides structure and length on the palate. A beautifully balanced, medium- weight Cabernet with all the hallmarks of this 20heritage label. Pristine varietal cabernet fruit balanced for guaranteed cellaring
McGuigan The Philosophy Cabernet Sauvignon Shiraz 2013
The fruit for this wine is sourced from Clare Valley, South Australia. The Clare Valley is famous for producing red wines with the distinct power, yet refined elegance. This is due to the regions warm days to aid in optimal ripeness and cool nights which slows the ripening down and assists in creating balance due to natural acid retention.
The Cabernet Fruit is sourced from the seven hills edge of Clare Valley. This area is slightly warmer than the more northern localities which makes it perfect for ripening Shiraz.
The first pressings are fermented in 7 tonne concrete open fermenters with wooden heading down boards. This ancient method of fermentation ensures a gentle leaching of colour and tannin from the skins without over extracting them. Once the fermentation is complete the wine is transferred to new and 12 month old tight grained French oak for 234 months to mature before bottling. The wine is then stored in a temperature controlled warehouse for a further two years to continue to develop before release.
Shanahans If Forever Exists Barossa Valley Shiraz 2016
Sourced from select vines located in a single vineyard in Marananga region on the western side of the Barossa Valley from vines planted in 1900. The Shiraz grapes were individually picked out in the vineyard for their exceptional quality and picked separately to the rest of the vineyard.
The grapes are then handpicked and delivered to the winery and de-stemmed by hand on sorting tables before being transferred to a small purpose-built concrete fermenter. The juice is pumped over two to three times daily for seven days to extract, homogenize and regulate temperature before draining and loading the basket press by shovel. The skins are then gently pressed for approximately 24 hours to retrieve more of the essence of the grape. This juice is then blended with the juice collected earlier. After the wine has completed its malolactic ferment, it is matured in a mixture of American and French Puncheon barrels for 3 years without topping then bottled without fining or filtration.
Normans Old Vine Barossa Valley Shiraz 2018
The wine was fermented in small stainless steel fermentors to retain concentrated fruit flavours. To complete the fermentation process and maturation the wine went into mostly old oak barrels with a small percentage of new oak for a period of 12 months. This enabled the oak flavour from the barrels to slowly infiltrate the highly concentrated fruit flavour creating a well balanced yet complex tannin structure. Another stunning Barossa vintage with lower yields but high-quality fruit ensuring it was our selected location for this year’s release.
The Colonial Estate Exile Barossa Valley Shiraz 2018
The finest selection of 100-year-old dry grown vines, which are pruned severely and receive two runs of green harvesting finally producing one tonne to two tonnes per acre. The grapes were then hand-picked, and the grapes sorted. The 2018 vintage was characterized by steady ripening of fruit and we were able to select individual blocks in the vineyard to get the very best fruit flavours with some tight ripe tannins. The wine is fermented in vats after extreme cold maceration. The wines have their malolactic in new French oak and are thereafter in the same oak for 24 months prior to bottling with minimal filtration and then further aging in bottle.
Clarendon Hills Bakers Gully Syrah 2012
This is Roman Bratasuik's entry level Shiraz intended for early drinking sourced from younger dry grown vines. Maturation takes place in French oak (85% new) for a period of 18 months.
Draytons Family Bellevue Heritage Grand Reserve Hunter Valley Shiraz 2017
Open tank fermentation 9 days on skins. Clarification after malolactic fermentation Maturation in American barriques.
Mount Langi Ghiran Billi Billi Shiraz 2017 Export Cork
The 2017 Billi Billi Shiraz is sourced from a selection of premium cool climate vineyards throughout Victoria; predominantly the Grampians including a portion from the Mount Langi Ghiran vineyards, home of the iconic Langi Shiraz. The 2017 vintage delivered ideal growing conditions with a long dry summer and cool nights.
Normans Chais Clarendon McLaren Vale Shiraz 2016
Fermented in stainless steel, small volume fermentors to maintain strong fruit flavour from skins. Hand plunged twice daily for seven days then transferred into American and French oak barrels for the remainder of ferment then spent 14 months to allow full flavour development.
Wynns Coonawarra Estate Black Label Cabernet Sauvignon 2018
Wynns Black Label Cabernet is a true icon of Australian wine. First produced in 1954, it has a reputation for ageing gracefully and displaying excellent varietal and regional characteristics. The wine is produced from only the top quality 20 to 25 per cent of Cabernet Sauvignon fruit grown in our terra rossa vineyards. A wine of style and stature - and a perennial favourite in auction circles - ‘Black Label’ is one of Australia’s most collectable wines and Australia’s benchmark Cabernet Sauvignon. It consistently delivers potential for medium to long-term cellaring.

"Closed restrained nose that smells of "rain on asphalt!" thought one judge. Warm and powerful in the mouth with some "grippiness". "The tannins are lovely", said another."
96 Points - Huon Hooke The Real Review
"Very deep, dense red/purple colour with a powerful, oak-driven but complex bouquet of blackberry, blackcurrant and cassis, the concentrated palate following on faithfully from this with firm tannins and plenty of oak. There's a subtle thread of peppermint and the wine is deliciously clean and vibrant, fresh and loaded with energy. It should be long lived and will richly reward cellaring. ('Created by Neil McGuigan'. You have to search for the region, but the website says it's Clare Valley) the empty bottle weighed 1.1kg!"
95 Points - James Halliday Wine Companion
"SA is the only region mentioned on the label. In any case the weight of the bottle and the weight of the wine itself will shout down the minor details. This is an explosive red, all blood-rich berries and thunderous tannin, the sizeable hit of chocolate and toast entirely appropriate given the concentration of the fruit, and the extractive claw of the tannin. If you've already started planning for New Year's Eve 2050, this should just about have settled down by then, Diam permitting."
94 Points - Campbell Mattinson - The Wine Front
"Described by McGuigan as its “hero product” and so accordingly it comes with a hero price. No region is named on either the front or back label of the (extremely heavy) bottle, other than simply South Australia. The website mentions the Clare Valley in passing. No other details available but an earlier release was said to have been matured in both French and American oak. It’s wine as an ASIO officer, its identity and upbringing kept deliberately obscured.
The wine. It’s a beast. Substantial, grunty, grainy and persistent. Heroic style, loaded with fruit and oak, pounded with tannin. It’s like an extract from an airport novel, emphasis on the word extract. Everything’s explosive and obvious, the doors aren’t closed they’re slammed, every point is made with a beating of the fist. Chocolate, toast, asphalt, gum leaves, and a roar of tannin. It has the beef, the muscle, the sinew and the bone to live a very, very long life."
Christina Pickard - Wine Enthusiast Magazine
"Housed within an extremely heavy bottle, this blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon and 45% Shiraz offers heaps of richness and power despite some bottle age. It oozes plump red and black berries, chocolate, vanilla and vague herbal and earth nuances. It's just starting to hint at maturity by showing a little volatility. The palate is all about power although time is beginning to soften things. While the berry fruit is there, it's fading and is wrestling with chunky, drying tannins. Oak influence shows on the finish. This may cellar for another few years, but it's questionable whether the fruit will hold up."

"Complex nose of dark plums and spicy herbs. Intense weight of luscious fruit with a tarry edge on the palate. Will get even better with time in the cellar."
96 Point Rated - Sam Kim Wine Orbit
"Gracefully rich and immensely complex, the wine shows dark fruit intensity with spicy oak, tapenade, roast meat and dark chocolate notes on the nose. The powerfully concentrated palate displays lavish mouthfeel and spicy nuances backed by fine grainy tannins, making it firmly structured and impressively persistent."

"A rich, typically ripe Australian shiraz whose concentrated, confiture-like bouquet of cassis, blackberries, raspberries and blood plums has a meaty background of chocolatey oak, musky spice and a hint of raisin. It’s luscious and opulently flavoured, powerfully steeped in briary cassis, mulberry, blackberry and dark plum flavours, tightly knit with oak and reveals some leathery development. It finishes savoury, with a hint of licorice, dark olive and roasting pan."
92 Point Rated - Lisa Perrotti-Brown Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
"Deep garnet/purple, the 2012 Syrah Bakers Gully reveals attractive cassis, blackberries, black cherries, earth, aged beef and game notes with cloves and tobacco hints. Full-bodied, rich and concentrated, the palate is packed with flavor and framed by firm, fine tannins through the long and meaty finish."

"Excellent depth of colour. Mid- to full-bodied with tar, blackberry, dried herb and sweet redcurrant flavours. Choc-coffee notes have melted entirely into the fruit. Succulent. No problems drinking this now."

"The fragrant, floral red fruits and spice and pepper on the bouquet are joined by black pepper and licorice on the palate. Hard to resist at this price, very hard. No patience is required, it is ready now.""
91 Point Rated - James Suckling
"A bright and ripe shiraz that has abundant, pepper-laced blackberry and plum aromas with a fresh, zesty andintense core of fine and fresh tannin."
Huon Hooke - The Real Review
"Deepish red colour with a trace of purple, the bouquet shy, reserved, gently meaty-reductive and the palate lean and angular, with a hint of sweetness countered by firm, grippy tannins and acidity."
Christa Pickard - Wine Enthuasist Magazine
"This cherry-hued cool-climate Shiraz takes awhile to open in glass, but with time it rewards, with aromas of earthy spice, warm stone minerals and black-cherry fruit. The palate is equally as tightly wound, with powerful dusty tannins, lifted acidity and tangy fruit. This needs plenty of air or another year or two in bottle, but it nevertheless offers excellent value for money."
Decanter World Wine Awards

97 Point Rated & Top Ranked Cab Sauv - Huon Hooke The Real Review
"The colour is very deep, concentrated red/purple and the bouquet is a deep, brooding mix of blackberry violets, blueberry and blackcurrant. Perfect fruit ripeness. Oak is very background, and the palate is full-bodied and beautifully-structured, with the right amount of firmness in the tannins which run the full length of the palate and leave the finish cleansing and dry, the aftertaste refreshing and moreish. A superb wine and a classic of both variety and region. (The 63rd vintage of this wine)"
96 Point Rated & Special Value Buy - James Halliday Wine Companion
"One sip, you're in. Another seductive Black Label - its 63rd vintage - and it's a wow. Excellent vintage conditions have no doubt helped, but this Australian icon doesn't need a lot of assistance outside its trio of long-time 'curators': Sue Hodder, Allen Jenkins and Sarah Pidgeon. Masses of blackberry fruits, a touch of black olive savouriness, stewed rhubarb, violets. Casts a wide net across the palate with sustained black fruits and spice, but also notes of coffee grounds, bay leaf and vanilla. Oak enhances, yet keeps itself in the background."
96 Point Rated - Andrew Caillard MW
"Medium deep crimson. Classical cassis cedar aromas with roasted hazelnut, herb-garden, espresso coffee notes. Supple, elegant and minerally with gentle pure blackcurrant fruits, underlying cedar, dried herbs, vanilla roasted chestnut oak, superb mid-palate inkiness and vigorous fine grainy tannins. In some ways understated and sotto voce but lovely clarity and composure. A very age-worthy style yet with immediate appeal"
95 Point Rated - Jeremy Oliver
"A pristine, stylish Coonawarra cabernet of medium to fullish weight. Scented with violets, cassis, mulberries, dark plums and fresh cedar/chocolate oak, it’s long, elegant and firmish, with a wonderful drive of sumptuous flavour tightly wound around a finely balanced, gravelly spine. Underpinned by a suggestion of mint, it’s just beginning to reveal some of the complexity it will certainly deliver over the very log term"
93 Point Rated - Tyson Stelzer
"A legendary staple of every Australian cellar, the 63rd vintage of Wynns' beloved 'black label' contrasts the blackcurrant density of a warm summer with the fine-boned tannins and bright acid tension of long, slow autumn ripening. It's framed eloquently in French oak (21% new). Another classic for the long-term"
