The Penfolds Reserve Bin A Chardonnay 2019 is a wine of exceptional depth and complexity, crafted from the finest Chardonnay grapes sourced from the cool climate of Adelaide Hills. Despite challenges during the growing season, including below-average rainfall and poor fruit set during flowering, the vintage ultimately yielded exceptional fruit that displayed strong varietal character and excellent natural acidity. The wine captures the essence of the region's terroir, with an exquisite balance of fruit intensity and oak integration.
On the nose, the wine is initially restrained, but with a sprightly decant or a vigorous swirl, it awakens to reveal aromas of white peach, assorted stone fruits, and a hint of fresh crème anglaise or panna cotta. Subtle notes of struck match and smoky barrel-ferment add complexity, while the oak—80% new—is beautifully integrated, giving the wine a refined structure.
The palate is expansive and layered, with vibrant white peach fruits and defined natural acidity. Barrel fermentation contributes a roasted cashew nuttiness, while lees contact adds richness with notes of crème brûlée and a heightened, textural mouthfeel. The acidity is gentle, complementing the wine's texture rather than dominating, and allowing the wine’s character to shine through. This Chardonnay grows on the palate, with persistent flavors and a refined finish that speaks to its quality and potential.
Rated 98 points by James Halliday, and receiving 97 points from Andrew Caillard MW, Tyson Stelzer, and Ray Jordan, this wine has garnered praise from numerous critics for its balance, complexity, and elegance. It is truly one of the finest expressions of Adelaide Hills Chardonnay.
Pair this exceptional Chardonnay with roasted chicken, lobster with beurre blanc, or a rich seafood risotto. Its complexity and texture also make it a perfect match for creamy cheeses like Brie or a tangy goat cheese.

Hand picked, whole-bunch pressed, part direct to barriques for wild ferment and 100% mlf, the balance via tank for brief settling before 8 months in French oak (80% new). A beautifully detailed chardonnay, white peach and pink grapefruit plus supple creamy cashew run through the very long palate. Rubs shoulders with the best in the land.

“The transparency of chardonnay to articulately convey its terrior is remarkable indeed, and this wine tells the intricate story of Adelaide Hill’s hot summer and mild autumn of 2019. There is a generosity and a determined reservation communicated in aromatic reluctance, ultimately emerging a day after opening, charged with all the tension of cool autumn nights. Maker Kym Schroeter considers 2019 to be up with 2017 as a cracking vintage for good sulphides in the Adelaide Hills. This struck flint reduction that we adore in Bin A wafts gracefully over a core of precise lemon, grapefruit and white peach, leaping forth triumphantly on the front and coasting into a long tail of beautifully poised acidity, backed with a masterfully deployed, high- class cashew nut French oak. Another great hit in the grand legacy of Bin A – 97 Points.”

Adelaide Hills. Superstar chardonnay. Eight months in oak, 80% new. Which is a lot of new oak. The 2018 was 40% new oak. Flint and funk for sure but wow, does this wine have length. I doubt that I’ve ever written these words before: this is a chardonnay with a peacock’s tail. It’s pure chardonnay in its flavour profile, stone fruit and grilled nuts as matchstick warfare flies over the top, but it’s the incredible length of the finish that takes this wine completely out of the ordinary.
