Tasting Notes:

The Koehler-Ruprecht Kallstadter Saumagen Riesling Kabinett trocken is pungently scented with fresh ginger, lemon oil, tangerine zest, yellow fruit distillates and smoky black tea. Firm but bright on the palate and with stony underlying notes, it finishes with the saliva-inducement of saline, secretly sweet, iodine-tinged shrimp shell reduction.

Technical:

Saumagen is situated in the western part of Kallstadt. It is considered the best part of Kallstadt and even one of the best in Germany. The vineyard is not very large. Covering barely 100 acres, it yields about 300,000 bottles of wine per year. The climate is generally cool, with risk of frost. The soil is rich with limestone and gravel. Fermentation and aging is done in steel tanks.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Lou N from Great value for money I have now bought a third case of this wine. It it a fully fermented, dry, Alsatian style of Riesling. It shows already some aged characters and the colour is golden yellow. Just right for drinking now. The bouquet tells you that it is Riesling, but without the "Clare Valley typical mineral undertones" Lovely mouthful middle palate with still some citrus fruit dominance. Nice and dry longish finish. Drink within the next few months.

Rated 4 out of 5 by AllyS15 from Real German Riesling! I bought this riesling to remind me of the difference between German riesling and the Australian rieslings I'm more familiar with. And I was pleasantly surprised! Rieslings vary so much, from cheap, sweet wines to dry Eden Valley and Clare rieslings, and Wynns of Coonawarra. I shared this Kallstadter riesling (the wine delivered is labelled 2014, not 2012 as invoiced) with old friends, some of whom are more familiar with German riesling than I, and we enjoyed its floral notes and subdued sweetness.
