Tasting Notes:

Commonly from Bordeaux and Chile this wine is old world with plenty of stand up and stand over characteristics. A bright crimson purple with intense, inky violet colour. The aromas are coffee and chocolate, tobacco, leather, bell pepper, dark fruit. The palate somewhat echoes the nose, but is largely dominated by cassis, cherry, blackberry, blueberry, plum, pepper, earthy nuances, vanilla and spice. It is typically a medium-bodied wine.

Technical:

The Olssen Bass Hill Vineyard Carmenère wines have great depth of colour, a dried herb characteristic that I have not seen in other varieties, berries and a hint of coffee beans. Occasionally, in individual barrels, this has even looked more like espresso coffee. Fine tannins give the wine a soft textural mouthfeel. Pronunciation: car-men-YAIHR. This is only the second vintage of the BHV Carmenère and, we believe, the only Australian carmenère to be bottled as a straight varietal wine to this point. The fruit came from Bass Hill Vineyard, the Olssen family's vineyard in the southern part of the Clare Valley. Aged in French oak (18 months), the wine is quite lifted on the nose with very good depth of colour. The palate is very fresh with red cherries to the fore. Other red fruits balanced with oak make the wine very attractive indeed.

5 Star Rated Winery James Halliday Australian Wine Companion

94 Point Rated James Halliday Australian Wine Companion

"Planted on the Olssen family vineyard in '02 as part of the official Clare Valley Vine Improvement Scheme, one of the first such plantings in Australia. The colour is bright crimson-purple, and the fruit has a delicious juicy quality despite 18 months in French oak, the flavours in a red spectrum. Points for trail blazing."

In James Halliday Australian Wine Companion the Olssen of Watervale Bass Hill Vineyard Carmenere 2009 outpointed the following wines;
