Deep purple, with a bright purple hue. Concentrated notes of dark cherry and blood plums, followed by raspberry, bay leaf and lavender. Dark and focused, filled with juicy and vibrant fruit. Blood plum and magnolia on the mid palate. Sleek, plush tannins frame bright fruit, creating a seamless, layered wine, indicative of its cool-climate home.
Shiraz (formerly known as ‘Hermitage’) is an important part of Coonawarra’s history. The acknowledged reputation of Coonawarra for age-worthy wines has largely centered on Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Sauvignon Shiraz blends. However the very early history (in the 1890s) centred on other varieties – particularly Shiraz.
Today Wynns is privileged to hold Shiraz vineyards on many prime locations within Coonawarra. Vines for this label are between 30 and 110 years old. Wynns ‘Black Label’ Shiraz is a superb example of Coonawarra’s cool climate style. Displaying great fruit character, this wine has rich and complex flavours of red berries, spice and chocolate with layered fruit underpinned by tightly- focused tannins.
96 Points James Halliday Wine Companion
"Excellent depth to the colour heralds a wine replete with an abundance of purple and black fruits seamlessly woven together on the medium to full-bodied palate; oak and tannins provide the framework for a wine with a very long life ahead."
96 Points Goodfood.com.au Wine Of The Week
"Wynns' top-end reds, due for release on August 5, include this outstanding vintage of Black Label Shiraz. A relative newcomer to Wynns' line-up, Black Label is the shiraz equivalent, in price and quality, to the legendary Black Label Cabernet Sauvignon, made continuously since 1954. The 2013 vintage displays Coonawarra distinctive strength with elegance – where intense fruit and strong tannins meld seamlessly in a wine of great finesse. Our bottle drank well and evolved without degradation for four days after opening, suggesting a long cellaring life."
95 Points Bob Campbell
"Deep, inky Shiraz with impressive fruit density and sweetness. Dark berry, plum and chocolate/mocha flavours with a suggestion of floral characters (violet?). Elegant wine with energy. Surprisingly easy to drink now, but with obvious cellaring potential."
94 Points Jeremy Oliver
92 Points The Wine Front
"Plum, blackberry and chocolate aromas, clean and appealing, and not just simple fruit. The palate is medium to full-bodied and smooth, fleshy and yet elegant and understated, with medium body and lovely texture and balance. There is spice and softness, harmony from every angle. Very good each-way, drink or keep, shiraz."
