Tasting Notes:

The 2021 Port Phillip Estate Balnarring Pinot Noir is another brilliant example of Peninsula Pinot Noir delivering a heady mixture of black cherry and blackcurrant aromas along with some spicy whole-bunch-derived complexity. The medium weighted palate delivers loads of juicy dark cherry, strawberry and raspberry flavours which are a feature of this lovely approachable Pinot Noir.

Technical:

Although 2020 Winter was mild, it provided excellent rainfall, with approximately 225mm falling evenly throughout June, July, and August. Budburst commenced in the second week of September, a typical start to a season on the Mornington Peninsula. Spring presented typical conditions with fluctuating temperatures and rainfall. Temperatures stabilised before flowering, and the region experienced favourable conditions throughout this critical time of the season. All our vineyards enjoyed good flowering and fruit set. While early Summer rainfall was below average, conditions shifted to wet and humid during January. The viticultural team worked diligently to ensure our vineyards remained disease-free. Veraison commenced mid-January, earlier than the last couple of seasons. Our vineyards were replenished with good natural rainfall during this time, thus satisfying the increased water demand of grapevines. The sunny but relatively cool weather throughout February meant ripening was slow and steady. Harvest commenced in early March and continued into early April. The weather remained mild throughout, and harvest progressed at an even pace, providing ideal conditions.

Accolades & Awards:

92 Point Rated - Campbell Mattinson The Wine Front

It’s grown on a vineyard at Balnarring, acquired by Port Phillip Estate in 2007 but planted in 1997 – though there have been new plantings since then. It starts off light and cool but it builds, both in flavour and in texture. Cool alpine herb, cranberry, red cherry/strawberry and twig-like notes come with a general foresty persona. Tannin, gently assertive and lightly smoked, is a feature, as is the way a velvety softness takes over from the frisky start. Hold off for a couple of years; it needs it.

90 Point Rated - Huon Hooke The Real Review

Medium-light purple-red colour with a note of bacon-fat on the nose, cherry and raspberry beneath, while the palate is rich and full, with good depth of smoky cherry flavours and quite assertive but balanced tannins, fruit-sweet at its heart and quite long in the finish.
