Pirathon Silver Shiraz 2018 is Deep red with violet hues with a nose that is at once complex, savoury oak flavours of cloves, toast and warm spices intertwined with black fruits and a sarsaparilla like lift. It has a rich and inviting palate, upfront dark fruits in the blood plum and blackberry mould meld around assertive ripe tannins. With air, savoury characters come to the fore with black olive tapenade, nutmeg and cured Barossa meats. Oak maturation is noticeable giving clear structural and textual elements with a long and expressive flavour profile that will continue to evolve with careful cellaring.
The 2018 Barossa Valley growing season started off well, with winter rainfall around 10% higher than average ensuring soil profiles were full. Spring saw moderate rainfall with a warmer than average October and November allowing vine canopies to grow quickly. Weather conditions allowed for good flowering and fruit set which resulted in good bunch numbers.
Each vineyard was harvested at optimal maturity across a period from early 2018 to early 2019. Following harvest, each individual lot of grapes was crushed into a separate open top fermenter. During fermentation, hand pump-overs gently extracted colour and flavour from the grapes. After 7-12 days on skins the fermented grapes were pressed with a traditional press. The wines were then filled to new and seasoned American, French and Hungarian oak hogsheads for maturation for eighteen months before each lot of wine was racked from the barrel and carefully blended. The wine was bottled without fining, ensuring the true expression of the vineyards in the bottle.

"I like this. A rich wine to be sure, glimpsing Barossan classicism with fruitcake spice and the mocha-vanillin burr of some American oak handling. Yet there is a decorous freshness and sophisticated sensibility. Dried nori, purple fruits, a smattering of star anise, clove and a nourishing core of beef bouillon-umami and biltong. The grape tannins are righteous for the region, corralling the flow of fruit while sewing seams of tension."

"Another solid, well-built Barossa shiraz where the winemaker lets rip with Barossa power, but also brings forth a degree of elegance. The latter is delivered through lively red and black fruits with dried raspberry, dark plum and blackberry that lift the wine contributing an impressive fragrant complexity. Oak is on view but balanced with sweet vanillin, warm toasty notes. Tannins are sturdy but well-resolved and like the 2017 shiraz, alcohol is on the generous side hitting the scales at 15%. It carries it well. This is the bold, generous expression of Barossa shiraz that many of us love. It is of a style to be sure but the quality and intensity of fruit – definitely the hero here – lifts it well above the average."

"From 10yo Barossa Valley shiraz, destemmed, some whole berries, aged in French and American oak (15% new) for 18 months. Ripe blackberry, black cherry and blood plum fruits are joined by hints of baking spice, cedar, plum jam, licorice and dark chocolate. Medium bodied, with sweet black fruits, fine sandy tannin and a bright line of acidity. Just a little alcohol heat on the finish."
