Technical:

My aim with Eligo is to produce a structured butelegant expression of Barossa Shiraz. A wine with restrained power, rich texture and palate length. Eligois a vineyard selection of the best, low yielding parcels of exceptional fruit that I find during the vintage.  The growing season was characterised by lowwinter and spring rainfall, which was followed by ahot spell in mid-December. The hot conditions werethankfully broken by 40 mm of rain in late January. The timing of this rain was perfect, particularly forour dry grown vines. The balance of the ripening season comprised warm days, but slightly coolerthan average nights, helping the vines to cope with the warm conditions.

Accolades & Awards:

98 Points - James Halliday

"Eligo is made from the best parcels of the vintage, fermented with submerged caps in small open fermenters, matured for 20 months in French hogsheads (50% new). The tannins and oak are built into the wine like an inlaid checkerboard table created by a master craftsman with decades of experience. Like John Duval."

96 Points - Nick Butler

"Inky and bright. No shortage of colour. Initial oak varnish blows off with a few swirls. Black olives, purple plums and oak-spice - lots of moving parts. Imperious when sipped; intensely-cored with lashings of quality caramel oak. A beautiful young, confident shiraz. Built for the cellar"

96 Points - Toni Patterson MW

"An outstanding colour with deep red hues. Dense and rich with subtle sweet oak tones. Hints of clove, liquorice, chocolate and plum liqueur. Remarkably deep, plush and dense, yet still lively and perfectly supple. With wines such as this, John Duval asserts himself as a master of shiraz. Full-bodied and luscious. An Australian classic."

94 Points - James Suckling

"Duval’s eye is good in 2016 with a super rich array of plums, chocolate and blackberries on offer. Full-bodied palate and a strong, long and attractive core of fleshy, ripe fruit. Zesty kick on the finish."

91 Points - Jeremy Oliver

"Sumptuous and richly fruited, with a spicy, earthy bouquet of dark plums, prunes, raisins and blackberries backed by creamy, chocolatey oak. Underpinned by ferrous tannins, it delivers genuine length and power with a thick, slightly baked and bloody presence of dark plums, blackberries and roasting tray drippings. Time is needed to flesh out and soften."
