The Henschke Henry's Seven Shiraz Blend 2018 offers lifted aromatics of red berries, black cherry and plum are supported by violets, anise, sage and cracked pepper. Technical:

The acclaimed Henschke family, foundation members of Australia’s First Families of Wine, was one of the pioneering families of South Australia when Johann Christian Henschke migrated from Silesia (Germany in 1841). Each generation has contributed to the legend with fourth generation Cyril Henschke pioneering varietal, single-vineyard wines in the 1950s, most famously Mount Edelstone and Hill of Grace Shiraz. Fifth-generation winemaker Stephen and his viticulturist wife Prue have won many awards for their talent, innovation and integration of vineyard and winery. They lead the way with environmental, biodynamic and organic principles. Henschke wines are handcrafted and deeply personal, reflecting the unique terroir of vineyards: the wine names tell either a personal story of the family or the cultural history of their region.

This shiraz, grenache, mataro, viognier blend is a tribute to Henry Evans who planted the first vineyard of seven acres at Keyneton in 1853. He quickly developed a reputation for producing the best wines in the southern colony. Following Henry’s death in 1868, his widow Sarah exercised her temperance convictions by closing the winery and uprooting all the winegrapes. This blend highlights the historical introduction of southern French and Spanish varieties to South Australia in those early pioneering days and reflects the history, religion and culture of the Barossa.

67% Shiraz, 17% Grenache, 10% Mataro and 6% Viognier

Accolades & Awards:

94 Point Rated - James Halliday Wine Companion

"67% shiraz, 17% grenache, 10% mataro and 6% viognier from the Eden and Barossa Valleys. The shiraz and viognier were co-fermented, the other varieties fermented separately, matured in French hogsheads (10% new). Shiraz/viognier dominates the blend, but does so without bluster - indeed this is a wine with javelin of linearity that is from fruit and acid, not tannins or oak. This could be a sleeper, stealing the show in 10+ years."

92 Point Rated - Stuart Knox The Real Review

"Blood plums and dark chocolate aromatics. Purple fruits roll across the palate with hints of mocha, bay and sweet spice. A full velvet mouth-feel, with a richness that is ultimately well-controlled by some fine tannins"

92 Point Rated - Nick Stock Jamessuckling.com

"Such good value here, this offers so much young complexity with charcuterie and swirling spices dressing ripe plums and blackberries, thanks to the 67% shiraz, co-fermented with 6% viognier. The 17% grenache and 10% mataro add treble and bass to a substantially fleshy mid-section that is packed with ripe-blackberry flavors. Forget the numbers, it’s all about drinkability."

91 Point Rated - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

"A blend of 67% Shiraz (co-fermented with 6% Viognier), 17% Grenache and 10% Mataro, the 2018 Henry's Seven boasts aromas of boysenberries and blueberries. plus hints of dried spices. Matured in 5% new and 95% seasoned French hogsheads for nine months prior to blending and bottling, oak is a minor element, with the fruit flavors coming through loud and clear on the medium to full-bodied palate. It's supple and easy to drink, with a hint of stone fruit on the long and softly dusty finish."

90 Point Rated - Campbell Mattinson The Wine Front

"This is a good red wine, just complex and powerful enough, if not profound. Red berried fruits, lots of earth and clovey spice, just into medium in weight, just enough (well integrated) tannin. It’s well balanced and made, and feels squeaky clean throughout. There isn’t a lot of excitement right now but I suspect that it will age well in the medium term."
