Tasting Notes:

The Chain of Ponds Pilot Block Adelaide Shiraz 2020 shines with a deep dark plum red color, tinged with a slight purple hue. On the nose, the wine reveals an enticing mix of ripe plums, blackcurrant, and dark cherries, complemented by an overlay of spicy cinnamon and baking spices. Subtle tones of vanilla and mocha lift the bouquet, adding layers of complexity.

On the palate, this Shiraz is rich and full-bodied, dominated by blackcurrant, with additional notes of dark plum, blackberry, and a touch of dark chocolate. A delicate floral lift of violet balances the fruit intensity. The wine showcases good balanced acidity and smooth, velvety tannins, which are complemented by a spicy oak backbone that adds further complexity. The finish is long and generous, with an underlying savory spice character that lingers, perfectly harmonizing with the wine’s primary fruit characters.

This exceptional Shiraz is a 90-point rated wine by both Ray Jordan of Wine Pilot and Sam Kim of Wine Orbit. Crafted by trophy-winning winemaker Greg Clack, Chain of Ponds continues to produce award-winning wines from the Adelaide Hills region.

Technical:

Our Pilot Block range is named in recognition of the first trial vineyard planted by Chain of Ponds in 1985. The Pilot Block vineyard was planted with numerous varieties to test their suitability to cool climate conditions. The success of that trial started Chain of Ponds on its winemaking journey.

Grapes were sourced from premium vineyards and vinified to retain vibrant ripe plum and blackberry fruit characters. The wine was then matured in French oak for 12 months giving richness and complexity. We hope you enjoy this finely balanced, soft and elegant Shiraz.
