Tasting Notes:

Ruby red shading to brick red at the edges. Balsamic and liquorice notes along with rich fruit compote on the nose leading to a palate of fresh fruits, balanced tannins and a long, intense finish.

Technical:

Aged for five years in the cellars of Bodegas Navalón in the small DO Valdepeñas, located in the heart of Spain. Bodegas Navalón has been the passion of the same local family for several generations. Anciano Aged 5 Years is a mellow, smooth wine thanks to the quality of the fruit and long ageing in barrel. The Tempranillo grapes were hand-picked late in August/early September from 30-year-old vines in stony Valdepeñas vineyards. The soil is clayey lime and the climate continental - cold winters and hot, dry summers. Fermentation was at controlled temperatures (20-23°C) for 15-17 days in stainless steel tanks. The wine was then matured in French and American oak barriques.

Rated 4 out of 5 by AllyS152 from An interesting change from shiraz I'd normally drink shiraz, but my eye was caught by the range of Anciano Tempranillos of various ages, so I ordered in assortment: 3yo, 5yo, 7yo and 10yo. I find that, Yes, I do like Tempranillo, as a reasonably heavy red wine, and an interesting change from Shiraz. And since I generally like reds with a bit of age, I wasn't surprised to find that my favorite was the 10yo. But, considering the price, the 5yo is a good buy. I'll be looking out for it in the future.

When my present holding of this wine runs low I will certainly replenish it with any of the Anciano tempranillo wines.

Nice fruit that would go well with some pasta etc . It tasted a little 'young' believe it or not and prefer paying a little more to have thew 7 & 10 year old.
