The 1838 Reserve Shiraz 2023 is a beautifully crafted wine sourced from several renowned growers in South Australia, showcasing the region’s renowned winemaking potential. While yields were down across the area in 2023, the selection of different sites allowed for extended harvest periods, bringing out unique vineyard characters that complement each other. This careful selection of parcels was followed by small-batch fermentation with extended skin contact, allowing for the full expression of the grapes and the production of a rich, complex wine.
In the winery, warm fermentation and daily pump overs ensured the extraction of deep flavours and textures, while aging in old oak barrels (2-3 years old) added an extra level of complexity without overpowering the fruit. The result is a Shiraz with a deep purple to crimson red hue, and an intensely aromatic nose that opens with dark fruit notes of freshly cut plum, and blueberry, complemented by mocha, chocolate, and a hint of licorice, along with subtle oak nuances.
The palate of this wine is velvety in texture, showcasing remarkable fruit concentration in its youth, with layers of plum, chocolate, licorice, and a touch of spice. The perfectly integrated oak provides structure, while the fine-grained tannins give the wine its line and length, leading to a smooth and satisfying finish.
Rated 92 points by Wine Showcase Magazine and 92 points by Sam Kim Wine Orbit, the 1838 Reserve Shiraz 2023 is a standout wine from one of the region’s best-selling Shiraz ranges. Whether enjoyed now or cellared for further maturation, this wine will continue to develop and reward those who appreciate fine Shiraz. It pairs beautifully with grilled steaks, roast lamb, or rich pasta dishes, making it an ideal companion for hearty meals or cheese platters, bringing out the richness of both the wine and the food.
