Tasting Notes:

Outstanding colour displaying an inky black purple core and very deep dark purple black hue. Fragrant and explosive aromas of ripe blackberries, dark chocolates and liquorice emerge on the nose underpinned by fantastically well integrated oak and spice. Full bodied the palate boasts rich flavours of ripe blackberries, dark chocolate and liquorice followed by some mocha and spice. Generous fleshy mouth feel with velvety smooth tannins. Long dark chocolate, liquorice, spicy mocha and vinillin oak finish.

Technical:

Fruit was sourced from 3 vineyards in the McLaren Vale region of South Australia form another incredible vintage. The different sites allowed us to pick the fruit over a 3-week period allowing each vineyard to develop differing characters to compliment each other and also allowed us at the winery to treat parcels individually in small ferments with longer than outstanding wine with obvious time and care taken with it throughout the vinification process. This wine was fermented warm and received pump overs on a daily basis during fermentation. Aged in both new and old oak to add another level of complexity without over powering the fruit.

For general use I find 1838 Reserve Shiraz an exceptional value - far better than an everyday quaffable wine. With it's smoothness tempered by structure you would only expect in a far more expensive wine, I find this Reserve extreme value for money.
