Tasting Notes:

Vibrant and elegant Grenache, the old bush vines really display their class in the 2016 vintage. The wine is fragrant, fresh and full of red cherries, raspberries and crunchy pomegranates. Savoury characters evolve into spices and dried herbs. A concise yet fleshy palate with rich red fruits weaving through a juicy, mouth-watering mid palate, with elegant tannins and fresh acidity to finish. Drink now or cellar through to 2025.

Technical:

Sourced from low-yielding 35-80 year old bush vines. Sweet plums, liquorice and spice complement a velvet soft mid palate texture and long opulent finish. Yalumba is extremely fortunate to have a resource of very old, gnarled bush vines which produce low yields of concentrated Grenache. A range of terroir can be seen across the different vineyards, from sandy soils to sandy loam to red-brown earth over red clay.

Often described as one of Australia’s unsung heroes, Grenache is naturally lighter in colour than Shiraz or Cabernet Sauvignon but continually provides us with wonderful big fruit flavours. Yalumba is extremely fortunate to have access to some of the oldest Grenache vineyards in the Barossa –with fruit for this wine sourced from vines planted between 1898 and 1973.

Accolades & Awards:

93 Points - James Halliday

"From vines predominantly aged between 35 and 80yo. Very pale colour; early picking (in grenache terms) has worked wonders. Crisp, bright red fruits rocket along the palate without even a hint of confection, in its place a touch of French oak."

90 Points - Huon Hooke

"Light to medium red colour with a faint purple tinge, dried herbs and subtle spiciness. The palate is soft and rich and fleshy without too much tannin or alcohol or density. Oak is barely perceptible. Raspberries. The tannins are light, soft and gentle. It's a delicious wine but happily avoids the simple grapy style. (Average vine age 60 years, Tricentenary block plus growers. Aged in 5-6 year old hogsheads of 300 litres.) "
