The Clare Valley has long been a cradle of innovation in Australian winemaking, where classic traditions and emerging varieties have shaped wines now loved across the country. This philosophy continues with Mr Mick Clare Valley Sangiovese 2024, produced by legendary winemaker Tim Adams and named in honour of the great KH “Mick” Knappstein. The fruit for this release was grown on the Rogers vineyard in the heart of Clare Valley, where the Italian variety thrives in rich terra rossa soils and cool-climate afternoons. Fermented on skins for one week under a gentle, controlled regime, the wine displays purity of fruit and fine tannins, resulting in an unoaked, fresh and expressive style that reflects both its European heritage and bold Australian character.
In the glass, the wine opens with bright red cherry and juicy raspberry, while a savoury edge of dried thyme gives depth. The palate is medium-bodied and energetic, delivering vibrant red fruits supported by firm yet fine-grained tannins and a refreshing, crunchy acidity that carries flavour through to the finish. This style is made to drink young and is brilliant slightly chilled in warmer months, capturing a modern Clare Valley expression of Sangiovese that feels both familiar and exciting. While no formal show ratings are attached to this release, the producer’s accolades—including Tim Adams’ reputation as one of Australia’s most respected winemakers—reinforce its pedigree and real value at the table.
Food pairing is effortless, lending itself to simple, vibrant dishes: think wood-fired pizza topped with prosciutto and roasted capsicum, fresh tomato pasta with basil, Mediterranean salads with grilled vegetables, or even charcuterie with olives and pecorino. The wine’s structure also complements lighter dishes such as mushroom risotto, roast chicken with herbs, or a summer antipasti spread shared outdoors. Enjoy now for brightness and lift, or over the next two years for added savoury complexity as the fruit settles and the tannins soften gently in bottle.
