Tasting Notes:

The Leconfield Manor House McLaren Vale Shiraz 2022 is a commanding yet beautifully polished expression of McLaren Vale, showcasing the depth, generosity and finesse that have long defined this iconic estate. Crafted by the highly regarded Leconfield Wines, this release delivers a rich, layered style that remains focused, balanced and seductively textured throughout.

From the first pour, the wine announces its presence with an expressive bouquet of black and blue fruits, led by ripe blackberry, cassis and dark plum, interwoven with lifted violet aromatics and subtle notes of cumin, roasted hazelnut and crushed herbs. As it opens, deeper layers emerge—mocha, dark chocolate, vanilla and nutmeg—alongside hints of eucalyptus and a gentle touch of white pepper spice that add savoury intrigue and complexity.

The palate is dense yet impeccably composed, offering juicy blackberry and dark plum flavours framed by firm, polished tannins and a bright line of natural acidity that keeps the wine vibrant and precise. A velvety mouthfeel carries through to the finish, where lingering notes of fruit cake, ground coffee and mocha leave a lasting impression of depth and refinement. While full-bodied and dry in style, the wine remains remarkably balanced, avoiding heaviness in favour of elegance and clarity.

Critically acclaimed, this vintage has been awarded an outstanding 95 points by Sam Kim (Wine Orbit), alongside 94 points from Ken Gargett (Wine Pilot) and Huon Hooke (The Real Review), with 93 points from Ray Jordan, reinforcing its pedigree as a benchmark McLaren Vale Shiraz. It is a wine that shines alongside slow-cooked beef, char-grilled lamb, rich game dishes or aged hard cheeses, where its structure and savoury complexity truly come into their own.

Powerful yet polished, the Leconfield Manor House McLaren Vale Shiraz 2022 is a compelling release from a 5-Red-Star James Halliday–rated winery, offering immediate appeal with the structure and balance to reward careful cellaring over the coming years.

Accolades & Awards:

95 Point Rated - Sam Kim Wine Orbit

“Gorgeously rich and enticing, the bouquet shows black/blueberry, violet, cumin and roasted hazelnut aromas, leading to a concentrated palate delivering terrific weight and plump mouthfeel. Splendidly framed by fleshy texture and layers of polished tannins, making it flavoursome and robust with a persistent, structured finish. At its best: now to 2037. $40.00.”

94 Point Rated - Huon Hooke The Real Review

“Deep red-purple; spice-laced ripe blackberry/dark-plum aromas with a lick of pepper and star anise; the wine is very intense in the mouth, full-bodied, concentrated and bold, with generous supple tannins in support and a touch of warmth on the long-lasting finish. 2025-2042.”

94 Point Rated - Ken Gargett Wine Pilot

“An early look at Leconfield’s latest foray in McLaren Vale, this time with Shiraz, was exciting. An inky black/purple hue here, the nose offers notes of spices and well-handled oak, with cassis, plums, mocha, dark chocolate, vanilla and nutmeg. There is also the remnants of a richly flavoured fruit cake. The wine is dense but balanced, well focused and with a seductive texture and silky tannins. This is really good and will drink beautifully for at least a decade.”

93 Point Rated - Ray Jordan Wine Pilot

“Such an elegantly presented McLaren Vale shiraz pumping out plenty of power and intensity as it drives through a deeply connected palate. Aromas of dark plum and blackberry with a lift of spices, dried herbs and a sprinkle of black pepper. It’s juicy and succulent with nice fruit cake and subtle roasted coffee grind characters. Vibrant and lively with an appealing mouth feel.”
