Tasting Notes:

Wynns Coonawarra Estate Black Label Cabernet Sauvignon 2018

Nose of Dark cherry and lavender imbued with underlying dried mint. The 2018 Black Label Cabernet is a combination of dark fruit and finesse.  Initially the palate is soft and round, but a fine tannin framework provides structure and length on the palate. A beautifully balanced, medium- weight Cabernet with all the hallmarks of this 20heritage label. Pristine varietal cabernet fruit balanced for guaranteed cell

Alexander King Cameron Heritage Reserve Limestone Coast Shiraz 2020

Black core with red brick hue. Beautifully fragrant nose with alluring blackberry, blueberry notes with oak and Chinese five spice adding the complexity. The palate is long and luscious displaying fleshy fruit flavours highlighting the high-quality fruit used for this wine. Blackberry characters, along with some blueberries, licorice, black pepper, and dusty leather interwoven across the palate with fine tannins lingering on the slightly spritzy finish. Will drink well now although will age well and develop more complexity.

Basedow Of Barossa Black Label Shiraz 2020

Dark red and purple hues. Balanced aromas of blackberry, cedar and pepper on the nose. The palate is decadent and rich flavours of plum, dark chocolate and black cherry combine with silky tannins to create a smooth finish.

Draytons Family Bellevue Heritage Grand Reserve Hunter Valley Shiraz 2018

This Shiraz is amber red in colour with an attractive fruit aroma of ripe plums, blackberries and subtle oak. The palate is medium bodied, yet exhibits full spicy, peppery flavours with a soft, round tannin finish. This wine has an excellent balance of acid and fruit; it is a great representation from a vintage regarded as one of the best from the Hunter Valley.

McGuigan Personal Reserve Hunter Valley Shiraz 2010

Garnet red. Aroma Upfront dark berry fruits with white pepper and subtle oak aromas. A dense and richly flavoured wine with a well rounded tannin structure and great length. Upfront forest berry flavours lead to a soft savoury finish.

Monolith Vintners Monolithic Old Vine Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon 2013

Deep ruby crimson colour. A massive intense and enticing nose, the initial hit of exotic fruit once allowed to breathe will mellow. Black berry and dark cherry are the dominant character whilst varietal character of cassis is also very evident. The French oak influence is still evident despite its age and highlights the quality of the new large format oak used. Concentrated, tremendous texture and depth are hallmarks of this wine. The great richness which comes from black fruits flavours is immense, brooding and dense. The age of the wine is evident through notes of earth and leather saddle although the fruit is just so potent that they are just a side show. This style of wine requires decanting and time to breathe to soften prior to consuming although will be cellared prior to release the wine has the fruit, alcohol and tannin structure to ensure cellaring for many more years where it will continue to evolve.

Viking Grand Barossa Valley Shiraz 2019

Dark deep red with crimson edge. Exceptionally concentrated and youthful currently, distinct nose of roasted herb, truffle and jammy black fruits, raspberries, blueberries and cassis. The body is round and voluminous with mouth fulls of  pure black fruit interwoven with some earth and roasted herb character adding a perfect side note whilst the finish is powerful and quite long and youthful it should only improve over the next 2 years and drink well for many years to come.

Monolith Vintners Monolithic Old Vine Barossa Valley Shiraz 2016

A massive all-encompassing nose but once allowed to breathe you will find this mellows. Dark plum and cranberry notes with leather saddle and earth which indicates the age whilst pepper, dark chocolate, and black currants all play a role here. The oak influence is obvious despite its age and highlights the quality of the new oak used. The palate is concentrated and straight up its no shrinking violet, offering up tremendous texture and richness with notes of dark plum, cranberry, black olive, saddle leather, alcohol and scorched earth. Brooding and densely packed, this style of wine requires decanting and time to breathe to soften prior to consuming although will be cellared prior to release the wine has the fruit, alcohol and tannin structure to ensure cellaring for many more years where it will continue to evolve.

Shanahans The Reaper Barossa Valley Shiraz 2019

Deep purple/garnet colour. A beautiful aromatic bouquet of dark chocolate, plum, blackberries, earth and black pepper. Concentrated fruit flavours of blackberry, plum, black olive, dark chocolate and earth. Allowing the wine time to open up will reveal a natural fruit elegance and perfectly engulfed oak flavours. The finish is long with perfectly balanced natural fruit acid and silky-smooth tannins which will ensure the longevity of this release.

Technical:

Wynns Coonawarra Estate Black Label Cabernet Sauvignon 2018

Wynns Black Label Cabernet is a true icon of Australian wine. First produced in 1954, it has a reputation for ageing gracefully and displaying excellent varietal and regional characteristics. The wine is produced from only the top quality 20 to 25 per cent of Cabernet Sauvignon fruit grown in our terra rossa vineyards. A wine of style and stature - and a perennial favourite in auction circles - ‘Black Label’ is one of Australia’s most collectable wines and Australia’s benchmark Cabernet Sauvignon. It consistently delivers potential for medium to long-term cellaring.

Alexander King Cameron Heritage Reserve Limestone Coast Shiraz 2020

The fruit was selected from a single vineyard with a northeast facing slope and picked at optimum ripeness and transported to the winery and immediately crushed. Following on from this we fermented the juice on skins for 12 days to maximise colour and flavour extraction. The skins were then pressed gently and the pressings pumped back with the free-run juice. The wine was then fermented over a week then allowed to settle and was then racked off lees. The wine underwent malolactic fermentation in barrel and then was aged in the same barrels for 14 months. The wine was blended and prepared for bottling with minimal filtration.

Draytons Family Bellevue Heritage Grand Reserve Hunter Valley Shiraz 2018

Open tank fermentation 9 days on skins. Clarification after malolactic fermentation Maturation in American barriques.

McGuigan Personal Reserve Hunter Valley Shiraz 2010

The fruit for this wine was sourced from the Bainton Vineyard in the subregion of Broke. This is a dry grown (unirrigated) Vineyard which accesses water supply from a subterranean water table. The resultant fruit provides highly concentrated flavours. Cool conditions throughout most of the growing season were coupled with dry hot conditions at the tail end of the season. At harvest due to low crop loads the grapes had excellent varietal and regional characteristics as well as a very dense colour hue. This wine is atraditional style Shiraz with minimal oak influence and has an enormous aging potential.

Monolith Vintners Monolithic Old Vine Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon 2013

The vintage indicated early the supreme quality that would be produced by the dry grown, old vines that yielded the fruit we isolated for this special once off trial. Our commitment to making French influenced Iconic Australian wine lead us to the Coonawarra region and we felt our style would best benefit from fruit from this region. We hand-picked the fruit and it was transported to the winery where it was gently de-stemmed into concrete open top fermenters. It was then carefully nurtured for 7 days on skins with pump overs occurring twice daily, varying in duration and intensity. When primary fermentation was almost complete, the wine was drained from the skins and the must is gently basket pressed for 8 hours. It is then run directly into new French Puncheon barrels (500 litres) where it spent the next 60 months of its life and we believe is a world first for barrel aging such a wine. The wine was then blended, and only the best barrels selected to be bottled without the use of filtration or fining. Aged in bottle before just 500 six packs were released.

A wonderful example of traditional French style Cabernet Sauvignon with our individual Australian twist which will stand the test of time, ensure it is allowed to breathe for at least 1-2 hours prior to consuming.

Viking Grand Barossa Valley Shiraz 2019

The fruit is sourced from a single vineyard in the Western Barossa Valley from the iron stone rich soils. The grapes are picked and delivered to the winery and gently worked through the de-stemmer before being transferred to an open fermenter.  The juice is pumped over daily to extract as much concentrated fruit as possible for a week period before draining and being basket pressed. The skins are then gently pressed for approximately 24 hours. After the wine has completed its malolactic ferment, it is matured in new and seasoned American oak barrels prior to bottling with minimal fining and filtration.

Monolith Vintners Monolithic Old Vine Barossa Valley Shiraz 2016

The 2016 vintage will go down as one of the finest vintages in the history of the Barossa. The vintage indicated early the supreme quality that would be produced by the dry grown, old vines that yielded the fruit we isolated for this special trail blend which was only the second in our history. Good winter rains were key as was the spring rains followed by a cooler than average summer which made for the near perfect conditions to create icon Barossa Shiraz. The wine was transferred into new oak to complete primary fermentation is completed and left in the same new French and American barrels where it spent the next 36 months with submerged bung with only one topping and sulphur addition. The wine was then blended, and the barrels were bottled without the use of filtration or fining.

A wonderful example of big and bold Barossa Shiraz which will stand the test of time, ensure it is allowed to breathe for at least 2 hours prior to consuming.

Shanahans The Reaper Barossa Valley Shiraz 2019

Sourced from a single old vineyard in the Greenock sub region of the Barossa Valley on the Western Ridge. The Shiraz grapes were individually picked out in this vineyard for their exceptional quality just for this specific wine as the vintage conditions ensured small bunches and bunch numbers with tiny concentrated berries which I felt was perfect for this limited release and the style I wanted to achieve. The grapes were picked and delivered to the winery for crushing and were fermented in one small batch. Fermented with submerged cap in a small open top stainless-steel fermenter the skins were basket pressed and combined with the juice before being drained into barrel for 24 months maturation prior to bottling with minimal fining and filtration.

Accolades & Awards:

Wynns Coonawarra Estate Black Label Cabernet Sauvignon 2018

97 Point Rated - Ray Jordan The West Australian

97 Point Rated & Top Ranked Cab Sauv - Huon Hooke The Real Review

"The colour is very deep, concentrated red/purple and the bouquet is a deep, brooding mix of blackberry violets, blueberry and blackcurrant. Perfect fruit ripeness. Oak is very background, and the palate is full-bodied and beautifully-structured, with the right amount of firmness in the tannins which run the full length of the palate and leave the finish cleansing and dry, the aftertaste refreshing and moreish. A superb wine and a classic of both variety and region. (The 63rd vintage of this wine)"

96 Point Rated & Special Value Buy -  James Halliday Wine Companion

"One sip, you're in. Another seductive Black Label - its 63rd vintage - and it's a wow. Excellent vintage conditions have no doubt helped, but this Australian icon doesn't need a lot of assistance outside its trio of long-time 'curators': Sue Hodder, Allen Jenkins and Sarah Pidgeon. Masses of blackberry fruits, a touch of black olive savouriness, stewed rhubarb, violets. Casts a wide net across the palate with sustained black fruits and spice, but also notes of coffee grounds, bay leaf and vanilla. Oak enhances, yet keeps itself in the background."

96 Point Rated -  Andrew Caillard MW

"Medium deep crimson. Classical cassis cedar aromas with roasted hazelnut, herb-garden, espresso coffee notes. Supple, elegant and minerally with gentle pure blackcurrant fruits, underlying cedar, dried herbs, vanilla roasted chestnut oak, superb mid-palate inkiness and vigorous fine grainy tannins. In some ways understated and sotto voce but lovely clarity and composure. A very age-worthy style yet with immediate appeal"

95 Point Rated - Jeremy Oliver

"A pristine, stylish Coonawarra cabernet of medium to fullish weight. Scented with violets, cassis, mulberries, dark plums and fresh cedar/chocolate oak, it’s long, elegant and firmish, with a wonderful drive of sumptuous flavour tightly wound around a finely balanced, gravelly spine. Underpinned by a suggestion of mint, it’s just beginning to reveal some of the complexity it will certainly deliver over the very log term"

93 Point Rated - Tyson Stelzer

"A legendary staple of every Australian cellar, the 63rd vintage of Wynns' beloved 'black label' contrasts the blackcurrant density of a warm summer with the fine-boned tannins and bright acid tension of long, slow autumn ripening. It's framed eloquently in French oak (21% new). Another classic for the long-term"
