Penfolds Bin 28 Kalimna Shiraz 2017
Well-balanced. Whirling black fruits and an oscillating Shiraz disposition – Bin 28 by any other name, personality intact. Flavours akin to a consommé of dried porcini mushrooms; structurally embedded with grainy/sandy tannins. Additionally, tobacco, tabasco and tamarind noted ... okay to mention taut, tenacious?! Exits with an almost negroni / Cynar bittersweet clean finish. Very much looking forward to monitoring this 2017 Bin 28’s journey in bottle. 12 months in seasoned American oak hogshead. Crimson red, a shimmer of garnet on rim Exuberant aromatics. At first, back to school – memories of black jelly beans, then a gentle spectral gradation to red liquorice and redcurrants. Adhering to this colour theme, goji berry, wild raspberry and a red-fruited chutney. A transient suggestion of sandalwood spices.
Fu Barossa Valley Shiraz 2016
Deep dark black with crimson hues. A hedonistic style which needs time to breathe to show its true character. The fruit characters are blackberry and there is white pepper and some seductive spice. Some age is showing and is evident through the characters of leather saddle, coffee, and chocolate. Powerful fruit flavours are evident thanks in large part to the old vine material used there’s a blanket of tannin and oak which all work together to provide the backbone. Plum, liqueur, leather, earth, coffee and smoked meat all perform back up roles. A perfect balance between oak and fruit has been achieved and these characters appear to have perfectly melted into one another over time due to the use of high-quality oak and minimal Sulphur use. The tannin structure is long and velvety with the wine having an incredibly long finish.
Draytons Family Bellevue Heritage Grand Reserve Hunter Valley Shiraz 2015
This Shiraz is amber red in colour with an attractive fruit aroma of ripe plums, blackberries and subtle oak. The palate is medium bodied, yet exhibits full spicy, peppery flavours with a soft, round tannin finish. This wine has an excellent balance of acid and fruit; it is a great representation from a vintage regarded as one of the best from the Hunter Valley.
Conquest Barossa Valley Shiraz 2017
Chunky old style with big, plum and blackberry flavours but also showing olive and licorice notes. Wonderfully full and vibrant palate with layers of fruit, oak and tannins.Lifted aromas of plums, blackberry, plum and black pepper with spice, dark chocolate and cigar. An outstanding match with all full flavoured red meat dishes. One of my favourite dishes is a big juicy Angus scotch fillet steak.
Kopparossa Coonawarra Reserve Shiraz 2012

Fastidiously made from a single vineyard in the heart of Coonawarra. A superbly crafted bottle aged wine that will truly demonstrate the tradition and style of a great Coonawarra Shiraz.

Traditional style Barossa Shiraz, the nose displays abundant fruit with layers of plush dark cherry, black currant and a lovely earth character balanced by integrated French oak.
A full-bodied Barossa Shiraz highlighting why I feel the Western Barossa Valley produces the best fruit. It’s a big chunky old style with amazing tannins that are supported by dark fruits and balanced acidity. Notes of Cherry, licorice and white pepper adds complexity while the balance of fruit intensity and oak provide this wine with great line and length.
Normans Peacock Barossa Valley Shiraz Cabernet 2017
Deep dark red colour, the bouquet of dark fruit and dried herbs and earth on the nose with hints of mocha and chocolate. The palate is full of soft dark fruit flavours when allowed to breathe, there is a natural earth character to the wine reminiscent of a Southern Rhone style blend. Blackberry, and blackcurrant in highly concentrated amounts, dark plum, liquorice all provide an opulent yet not overpowering feel. Spicy vanillin cedar, subtle earthy tobacco character and a touch of pepper. Its an old school style of wine more in line with the 80's and early 90's style of winemaking before high alcohol wines became accepted with wonderful aged character even in its infancy.

Deep garnet red with a deep dark core. Rich aromatic showing intense berry flavours with a hint of chocolate, mint and oak. The palate has great depth and persistence featuring alluring rich dark mulberry, chocolate and ripe cherry. The long persistent tannins drift along seamlessly with wonderful balance between tannin and oak which enables this. The alcohol is barely evident, but the signs of positive development show through on the finish with some alluring leather saddle.
Penfolds Bin 8 Cabernet Shiraz 2018
Lustrous garnet. Charmingly lifted aromatics with exotic Chinese five spice, satsuma plums, savoury roast meat, herbal dried rosemary and bouquet garni. Bright brambly fruits of the forest add depth and complexity. Dark cherry and forest cake fruits, earthy with touch of cigar box. A synergy between the generous shiraz flavours of across the mid-palate and the cooler fruits with the tension and structure that only cabernet sauvignon can deliver. An artful blend of complex, buoyant fruit and spice nuances backed by moreish acidity … and of course textbook firm graphite tannins. Generous mocha notes from oak maturation lend further depth and texture to the palate.
Penfolds Bin 28 Kalimna Shiraz 2017
Bin 28 offers a showcase of warm-climate Australian Shiraz – ripe, robust and generously flavoured. First made in 1959, Bin 28 is named after the famous Barossa Valley Kalimna Vineyard purchased by Penfolds in 1945 and from which the wine was originally sourced. Today, Bin 28 is a multi-region, multi-vineyard blend, with the Barossa Valley always well represented.
South Australia’s wine districts experienced a cool and wet winter and spring, which provided the vines with good soil moisture profiles. Longstanding rainfall records were broken across South Australia, with some regions experiencing minor flooding. October was windy, which caused some challenges with fruit set, however these winds warded off any danger from frost in Padthaway and Barossa Valley vineyards. The prevailing cool conditions extended the growing season with flowering and veraison both later than expected. There were no heatwaves, with only a handful of days recording temperatures above 40 degrees. Warmer weather in March was welcomed, allowing the grapes to finish ripening with great colour and varietal character. Harvest for shiraz grapes didn’t commence until mid-March, a month later than the previous year.
Fu Barossa Valley Shiraz 2016
This wine is sourced from a single old vineyard from what we consider one of the finest vineyards in the Barossa Valley. 2016 was one of the standout vintages of the last decade, the ideal vintage, which gave us the benefit of perfectly, ripened fruit. The smooth flow of vintage allowed us to select specific fruit parcels and allowed us to define the wine as much in the vineyard as the winery. These grapes are brought into the winery and crushed into old vats where the fermentation is initiated by “wild” yeasts found on the grape skins. Careful extraction and short post fermentation maceration is followed by soft pressing. The wine is transferred into brand new oak barrels where the malolactic fermentation is completed before racking and maturation for 36 months in barrels where it stayed with no topping or Sulphur addition. A careful assemblage and barrel selection are followed by minimal filtration and bottling.A wine which will benefit immensely with time in the cellar to settle and develop. It will have a great lifespan of around 15 years plus still.

Conquest Barossa Valley Shiraz 2017
Sourced from a vineyard in the heart of the Barossa between Nuriootpa and Tanunda the wine was fermented in small open top stainless-steel fermenters to retain concentrated fruit flavours. To complete the fermentation process and maturation the wine went into oak barrique barrels for 12 months. The use of oak has allowed the characters to infiltrate the highly concentrated fruit flavour creating a well-balanced yet complex tannin structure.

After the cold and rainy winter period in 2016 the Barossa had a spring which is one of the wettest on record. This set up a perfect 2017 crop and the mild weather pattern we encountered through veraison was ideal with top up rain fall during early 2017. The dry Indian summer finished off the growing season creating wonderful ripening conditions. The fruit was crushed, de-stemmed and left on skins in open top fermenters for 8-10 days. A slow ferment then occurred with temperatures ranging from 15-18C, the wine had open pump-overs and hand plunging to ensure fruit intensity. Once fermentation was completed the wine was pressed into old French barrels that were re-shaved just for this wine. The wine spent 24 months in oak to mature until I felt the time was right to bottle. Final barrel selection ensured only the best of the best wine made it into the final blend before bottling with minimal fining or filtration.
Normans Peacock Barossa Valley Shiraz Cabernet 2017
Sourced from two vineyards one in the warmer Seppeltsfield region and the other in the cooler Angaston region from vines with an average age of 90 years. Fermented in small open top stainless steel with some whole berries, these fermenters ensure we maintain strong fruit flavor from skins and whole berries. Hand plunged two to four times daily for two weeks then transferred into 1 and 2-year-old American and French oak barrels for the remainder of ferment then spent 24 months in the same barrels to allow full flavor development with minimal topping and Sulphur additions before being bottled without fining or filtration. Drinking well now but if you are patient enough to hold off this will develop beautifully in the cellar and build the aged character which has been a hallmark of this wine.

Fruit was sourced from our finest section of Cabernet Sauvignon on our block in the Coonawarra region of South Australia for this wine as selected by vigneron and winemaker collectively. The fruit was all hand picked and transported to the winery where the fruit was sorted, destemmed and crushed. Only the finest winemaking practices were used completed by fermentation in Hogs Head barrels and maturation for a period of nearly two years.
Penfolds Bin 8 Cabernet Shiraz 2018
Bin 8 has been crafted in the traditional Penfolds style. Ripe, balanced fruit flavours are supported by softly integrated oak resulting in an impressive, smooth red wine. It was introduced in response to a heightened interest in shiraz and cabernet blends – a classic Australian wine style that caught the attention of the international wine media. An early drinking style, which will keep for a few years, but is best soon after release.

"Deep, bright crimson. The battle lines are there before you smell or taste the wine. Penfold’s black-fruited depth and power on the one hand, the elegant vintage stamp on the other. Its balance and structure are the guarantee of a very long life."

"Deep crimson. The classic reference Australian shiraz with lovely intense blackberry, elderberry, dark chocolate aromas. Well concentrated and ripe with deep set blackberry, elder berry fruits, fine dense chocolaty slightly grippy textures and underlying roasted walnut notes, Finishes chocolatey and minerally with plenty of flavour length. The workhorse Penfolds red. Utterly reliable vintage-to-vintage with plenty of cellaring potential. 14.5% alc. Now-2030"

"Deep, bright purple/red colour, with a chocolate and fruitcake bouquet; vanilla and hints of licorice as well. The wine is full-bodied but far from a blockbuster. The tannins are firm and faintly sappy, with a thread of appetising bitterness, while the chocolate notes linger on. A good if not transcendent Bin 28."

"Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2009 Conquest Shiraz offers evolving aromas of mulberries and warm plums with hints of leather, tobacco and Chinese five spice. Mature and drinking well now, it has a medium to full body and a good amount of spiced warm berry flavors supported by crisp acid and a low to medium level of powdery tannins, finishing medium to long. Drinking well now."
