Tasting Notes:

Pours with a frothy white mousse that holds well over a pale straw coloured base with pale gold tinged edges. A nibble stream of tiny bubbles flowing through it. Pronounced aromatics of baked bread, pear and yeast lees aromas fills the nostrils with oily toast like notes and honeyed almond scents ensuing. Rich and full in the mouth expressive baked bread, yeast lees and oily toast flavours have a creamy textural feel with some pear and citrus characters also in the mix. Dry crisp finish with a long richly flavoured aftertaste. Drink over the next 3-4 years.

Technical:

A new find for us the Veuve Fourny Champagnes offer great value. The Fourny family have been growing vines in the Premier Cru of Vertus since 1856 with the fifth generation currently at the helm. The Blancs de Blancs is 100% Chardonnay sourced from vines over 40 years old and is aged for a minimum of 2 years on lees.

Accolades & Awards:

95 Point Rated Huon Hooke The Real Review

Light straw-yellow hue, with a most appetising aroma of citrus fruits and small flowers, obviously very chardonnay-driven and could easily be taken for a blanc de blancs. Very fine, crisp and lively on the tongue, with a refreshing dry balance. Outstanding freshness. Excellent wine. (80:20 chardonnay:pinot noir. Minimum 2 years on lees in bottle. Disgorged December 2019. Other details as for the previous bottle tasted)

94 Point Rated Halliday Wine Companion

A blend of 80% chardonnay and 20% pinot noir. 40% reserve wines from 2010-2012 matured in French foudres and in bottle (on lees) for at least two and a half years, this disgorged October 2018. It is fine and intense, and has tremendous drive and length to its citrus and apple flavours. Exceptional value.

92 Point Rated - Tyson Stelzer - The Champagne Guide

This is a cuvée that reaches deep into the mineral hillside of Le Mont Ferré in its elegance and mouth-embracing chalk mineral completeness, thanks to the privileged position of this plot on the border of Le Mesnil-sur-Oger. Fourny's mandate of purity and precision shimmers in a pale straw hue and spicy wild lemon, tangy grapefruit and crunchy apple of soap-powder brightness. There are nuances of fennel and star fruit along the way; true to the expressive, exotic personality of Vertus, lending a little more body and depth in the ripe 2015 season. This vintage possesses some of the dry-extract grip and green capsicum characters of mature phenolics that also marked the 2005 season, appearing subtly on the finish. A little oak vinification coaxes out understated nuances of ginger, biscuits, nougat, even fig, coffee and chocolate, without disturbing purity or drive. A characterful take on the identity of Vertus, and as persistent, reliable and affordable as ever.

4.5 stars - Tony Love - Herald Sun

You can pay a week's wage for high-end Champagne or search out lesser branded yet equally exciting artisan-produced wine like this, imported by De Bortoli. Three consecutive vintages at its core, 20% older reserve wines to add complexity. 30 months on yeast lees tick all the boxes for excellent Chardonnay fruit expression, purity of flavours, and balanced and energetic acidity.
