Tasting Notes:

The Penfolds Bin 311 Tumbarumba Chardonnay 2023 is a shining example of Penfolds’ philosophy of sourcing fruit where it grows best. Originally a single-region wine, Bin 311 now draws from the cool-climate vineyards of Tasmania, Tumbarumba, Henty, and the Adelaide Hills, ensuring a style defined by purity, minerality, and elegant structure.

This vintage is beautifully expressive, opening with lemon and lime aromas framed by a taut mineral backbone, the hallmark of its cool-climate origins. The palate carries the same clarity, led by preserved lemon, nectarine, and zesty pink grapefruit flavours, tightly wound for longevity. Subtle layers of white macadamia, almond meal, and toasted nuts add complexity, while a refreshing burst of citrus sorbet and mandarin peel broadens the citrus spectrum. The creamy, panna-cotta-like texture is perfectly balanced by bright acidity, finishing long, precise, and mouth-watering.

Already highly acclaimed, this release has been awarded 95 Points by Dave Brookes (Halliday Wine Companion), 94 Points by Andrew Caillard MW (The Vintage Journal), and 93 Points from both Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front) and David Sly (Decanter). A refined, cellar-worthy Chardonnay that drinks beautifully now and will continue to evolve gracefully.

Accolades & Awards:

95 Point Rated Dave Brookes Halliday Wine Companion

"Light to mid yellow hue; smoky reduction and nutty aromas, palate medium bodied and rich, with big flavour for its size and a lot of secondary complexities from oak and lees. A fuller flavoured Bin 311. Smart chardonnay indeed. Already showing well"

92 Point Rated Huon Hooke The Real Review

"Pale straw, lemon brightness. A gentle swirl reveals a nose that is both refined and complex. Delicate scents of talcum powder, followed by the refreshing mineral/floral notes of bath salts. Hints of candle wax and fresh linen emerge, while beeswax adds a subtle richness. The nutty sweetness of pistachio nougat is interlaced with the aroma of honeysuckle florals, providing depth and intrigue. Notes of raw cashew bring an earthy dimension that is balanced by the zesty spice of white peppercorns. Rounding out the aromatics are layers of preserved lemon and lemon rind, which lend a citrus sharpness, as well as the soft sweetness of friands and Madeleine sponge cakes piped with tangy curd.Upon tasting, this vintage reveals a palate that mirrors its aromatic intricacy. Leading with the intense clarity of preserved lemon, it unfolds to reveal succulent nectarine and zesty pink grapefruit flavours that are tightly coiled for longevity. White macadamia and almond meal provide a nutty undertone, while toasted nuts contribute to the wine’s layered/silky texture. A refreshing burst of citrus sorbet or sherbet enlivens the palate further, with mandarin peel adding breadth to the citrus spectrum. The texture nods to a creamy panna cotta or velvety buttermilk — rich yet perfectly balanced against the taut structure."

91 Point Rated Tyson Stelzer

"South-eastern Australia (Tasmania, Tumbarumba, Henty and the Adelaide Hills); matured 8 months in 21% new French oak barriques. A generous and approachable Bin 311 of juicy white peach and pear fruit, supported by toasty cashew nut French oak and touches of buttery lees complexity and earthy reductive nuances. Ready to drink now."
