The Bay of Fires Tasmania Chardonnay 2024 reflects the winery’s long-held vision to craft cool-climate Tasmanian wines of purity, refinement and seamless length. Sourced from hand-harvested fruit across the Coal River Valley and East Coast vineyards—several now reaching maturity after being planted specifically for Bay of Fires—this Chardonnay embodies the richness, balance and elegant structure that Tasmania is celebrated for. The 2024 growing season was near perfect, delivering good winter and spring rain, warm clear days and cool nights, ensuring slow, even ripening and pristine fruit expression. Gentle handling and restrained winemaking protect the vineyard’s natural character, while carefully judged French oak introduces complexity without ever intruding on the fruit.
Medium straw with a green hue, the wine opens with lifted aromatics of peach, preserved lemon and lemon blossom, supported by subtle notes of dried thyme and a faint flinty reduction. The palate is juicy yet refined, showing vibrant flavours of yellow peach, citrus and roasted hazelnut carried by a fine acid line that gives structure and length. The textural palate is long, elegant and beautifully balanced, showcasing the development of these maturing vineyards and the precision of the Bay of Fires team. A cool-climate style of genuine poise, it carries the pedigree of the previous vintage, which was 97 Points in the James Halliday Wine Companion and 93 Points from Aaron Brasher of The Real Review, signalling the consistent quality of this benchmark Tasmanian Chardonnay.
The wine’s combination of brightness, texture and subtle French oak makes it perfect with pan-seared scallops, roasted chicken with herbs, grilled prawns, salmon with lemon butter, creamy mushroom pasta or a wedge of aged brie. Its lively acidity ensures immediate appeal, while its structure promises graceful ageing.
96 Point Rated - Ray Jordan Wine Pilot
An impressive Chardonnay from the Coal River Valley and East Coast regions of Tassie. The nose is intense, offering a lemon-scented honeycomb combination, while the palate is textured with rich depth—lightly roasted cashew, quince, and a subtle savoriness. Impeccably balanced and poised.
94 Point Rated - Andrew Caillard The Vintage Journal
93 Point Rated - Aaron Brasher The Real Review
"Mid to deep straw in colour. There lifted and pretty aromas of nuts, stone fruit, grapefruit pith, white flowers, some struck match and a touch of creaminess. Mouth-filling, rich and layered, with a drive of stone fruit, citrus, nutty oak, melon rind and tangy acidity. There's some decent grip on the finish and the alcohol pushes through a touch."
92 Point Rated - Shanteh Wale Wine Pilot
A basket of fuzzy peach, cantaloupe and grapefruit, this crackles with some sparkler flint and the toasting of campfire marshmallows. A generous ray of sunshine is then countered by the cooling of Tassies frigid nights, the wine drinks with ease. Juicy orchard apples, lemon juice and an oatmeal oak spice. Nutmeg and powdered cinnamon sneaks in but it’s lifted and elegant, with a clean grapefruit flesh finish. If you are drinking now go for battered dory and well made tartare sauce but give it 3-5 years and this is cheesy lobster mac and cheese.
