Tasting Notes:

Shanahans The Barking Dog Barossa Valley Grenache Shiraz Mataro 2023 is a striking, fruit-driven expression of a time-honoured Barossa blend, crafted from hand-picked, old vine fruit—some as old as 70 years—from the western Barossa. Grenache leads the charge at 67%, bolstered by 27% Shiraz and 6% Mataro, delivering a wine that is vibrant, expressive, and built to impress both now and with graceful cellaring.

Deep purple with lighter ruby flashes, it bursts with fragrant red fruits, perfumed florals, forest floor, and a hint of exotic spice. On the palate, juicy red berries, cherry, and a touch of dried herbs are wrapped in silky, fine tannins, showcasing exceptional mid-palate weight and a seamless texture. The use of older, large-format oak allows the fruit purity to shine, delivering a beautifully finessed finish with a savoury backbone and generous length.

Awarded 95 Points and Gold Medal by Australian Wine Showcase Magazine, 94 Points by Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, 93 Points & 5 Stars by Sam Kim Wine Orbit, and ranked Wine of the Week by Huon Hooke The Real Review, this is a must-have for lovers of premium GSM blends.

Accolades & Awards:

93 Point Rated 5 Stars - Sam Kim Wine Orbit

"Wonderfully fruited and inviting, the bouquet shows sweet cherry, Black Doris plum, thyme and warm spice aromas, followed by a silky-smooth palate offering succulent fruit intensity, combined with finely pitched tannins, finishing splendidly long and satisfying. At its best: now to 2030. $23.00."

95 Point Rated - Australian Wine Showcase Magazine

"Lovely intensity of dark, briary aromas. An abundance of dark berry flavours come through on the long lingering, velvety palate. Good balance of spice and sweet fruit flavours."

Top Ranked & Recommended Wine Of Week - Huon Hooke The Real Review

"Deep, bright, youthful purple-red colour, the bouquet cassisy and berry-ish, with the layering of a good blend. The wine is full-bodied and firm, loaded with tannins that provide a firm backbone, and an extended finish. Chalky tannins fill the aftertaste: protein would be in order."

94 Point Rated - Erin Larkin Robert Parker Wine Advocate

"The 2023 The Barking Dog is a blend of Grenache, Shiraz and Mataro (Mourvèdre for those not in Australia or Portugal). Aromatically, the wine leads with plum jam, aniseed, black cherry, fennel seeds and raw cocoa—all serving as entrée to the sweet, pure-fruited palate. The wine is shaped by ferruginous tannins, no doubt a product of the ancient ironstone upon which the Barossa is formed. This is a wine that nods to the old school, with layers of roasted meat, brick dust and chewy tannins, but it heads in a decidedly modern, medium-bodied direction. This is excellent. It has a foot in both camps yet forsakes neither. 14% alcohol, sealed under screw cap."
