Tasting Notes:

Medium light crimson cherry in colour. Attractive, perfumed and varietal, with cherry and cranberry characters enhanced by whole bunch stalk and underlying graphite slate. French oak is subtle in the background adding spice and ethereal overtones. Medium bodied in style, the wine has great texture, fine acidity finishing with chalky/silky tannins. Dark cherry and savoury whole bunch spice notes are underpinned by seamless French oak and mineral graphite/slate. Characteristic of a milder Yarra vintage, this wine will mature gracefully with careful cellaring.

Technical:

Coldstream Hills was established in 1985 by James and Suzanne Hallidayand has since grown to become one of Australia's leading and most awarded small wineries. Situated in the picturesque Yarra Valley east of Melbourne, the steep close planted vineyards of Coldstream Hills have become a signature of the region. So too have its wines, which reflect regional character, consistency and style. Sourced from low yielding vineyards in the Lower and Upper Yarra Valley, all fruit is selectively picked prior to its delivery into the winery. It is made using a variety of handling and fermentation techniques, including the use of whole bunches. Each batch is then matured in seasoned and new oak for nine months, prior to blending and bottling.

The 2017 vintage was a return to a cooler weather pattern with cool spring months and a mild to warm Summer. Rainfall and yields were close to average, allowing grape flavour and sugar to ripen in a steady manner. Acid retention was excellent in the fruit giving rise to wines of freshness, vibrancy and great balance. Matured in seasoned and new (22.5%) French oak for nine months.

Accolades & Awards:

94 Points James Halliday Wine Companion

Generous, varietal, complex and persistent. This hits the bulls-eye for quality, not to mention impeccable winemaking. The sheets are pulled tight, the flowers arranged just so, the curtains pulled to allow the perfect amount of light; if this wine was a hotel room you'd immediately book again for next year. Macerated cherries, bright red berries, undergrowth, sweet spices; all here, all in good shape, polished to a higher level by a light kiss of cedary oak.
