Tasting Notes

Anciano Crianza Tempranillo Aged 3 Years 2015

A bright cherry red wine that is brimming with intense aromas of berry fruits enhanced by balsamic hints, vanilla and spice. Smooth and rounded on the palate, with concentrated cherry, strawberry and redcurrant fruit flavours and a long, velvety finish.

Anciano Reserva Tempranillo Aged 5 Years 2013

A ruby coloured wine shading to brick red towards the rim. Complex aromas of balsamic and liquorice combine with vanilla, spice and rich fruit compote on the nose. Appealing ripe berry and cherry fruit flavours come through at first taste, followed by balanced tannins and a smooth, satisfying finish.

Anciano Gran Reserva Tempranillo Aged 7 Years 2010

An intense red shading to tawny at the rim. A range of different characteristics can be identified on the nose – black cherry fruit, balsamic, leather, tobacco and vanilla oak. Medium to full bodied with real finesse, concentrated red fruit flavours, mellow tannins and a smooth finish.

Anciano Gran Reserva Tempranillo Aged 10 Years 2008

An intense dark red shading to brick red at the rim. A range of different characteristics can be identified on the nose – black cherry fruit, spicy notes of leather and musk, tobacco and vanilla oak. Medium to full bodied with some finesse, concentrated red fruit compote flavours and smooth, mellow tannins on the finish.

Accolades & Awards

Anciano Crianza Tempranillo Aged 3 Years 2015

90 Points - Sam Kim Wine Orbit

"Fabulously fruited and brightly expressed, the bouquet shows Black Doris plum, sweet raspberry, mixed spice and almond characters, leading to a flavoursome palate that is succulent and supple. It is up front and delectable with plenty of tasty flavours, finishing firm and pleasingly dry."

Anciano Gran Reserva Tempranillo Aged 10 Years 2008

94 Points - Sam Kim Wine Orbit

"Offering immense complexity and bottle-matured seductive flavours, the wine shows dark berry, roasted nut, cured meat, clove and roasted nut characters. It's equally engaging and satisfying on the palate, delivering elegant weight and flowing mouthfeel, well complemented by savoury richness and fine-grained tannins. A wonderful food partner."

Anciano Gran Reserva Tempranillo Aged 10 Years 2008

Bob Campbell - The Real Review

"Aged ten years in barrel and bottle before release. Made from grapes grown in Valdepenas. Quite an elegant, gutsy red with violet, black fruit, spice, vanilla and anise. Firm, drying tannins. Drink up"

Technical

Anciano Crianza Tempranillo Aged 3 Years 2015

Tempranillo grapes were hand picked from 30 year-old vines in stony vineyards – Valdepeñas means “valley of stones” – in late August/early September. The soils are clayey lime and there is a chalky layer which retains water to refresh the vines. Altitude helps moderate summer heat, as the climate in Valdepeñas is classic continental, with cold winters and long hot, dry summers.

Fermentation was at controlled temperatures (below 28º C) in stainless steel tanks. The wine was then matured for at least six months in oak barriques with varying toasting levels. The 2015 has been rated “Excellent” by the Valdepeñas DO. Generally, the climate and therefore grape harvest, is remarkably consistent in this part of Spain.
