The d'Arenberg The Derelict Vineyard McLaren Vale Grenache 2021 celebrates the old vine Grenache vineyards that Chester Osborn rescued at a time when the variety was largely overlooked. Crafted from carefully selected mature vineyards, this expressive Grenache showcases the elegance, fragrance and complexity that have helped re-establish McLaren Vale as one of Australia's premier regions for the variety. It was crafted by renowned winemaker Chester Osborn at a 5 Red Star James Halliday-rated winery.
Hand-selected fruit is fermented in small open batches before basket pressing and 12 months' maturation in a combination of new and seasoned French oak. Bright ruby in colour, the wine opens with aromas of red cherry, raspberry, strawberry and rose petal, complemented by subtle spice and liquorice. The medium-bodied palate is silky and vibrant, with fresh red berry fruit, savoury herbs and gentle pepper supported by polished tannins and lively natural acidity, finishing long, fresh and elegantly spiced.
Awarded 94 Points by Ken Gargett (Wine Pilot) and 90 Points by Marcus Ellis (Halliday Wine Companion), this outstanding Grenache is a perfect match for roast pork, chargrilled lamb, Mediterranean cuisine or mushroom dishes. Elegant, aromatic and beautifully balanced, it is a classic expression of premium McLaren Vale Grenache.

''As with all wines from here, they have been endowed with weird and wonderful names, the details of which are all available on the website. Not many wineries would be game to call their wine Derelict. No such issues here. This is from the wonderful 2021 vintage in McLaren Vale, with fermentation completed in old French oak, followed by time on lees. Crimson red with hints of a blue haze, the wine offers a lovely ripeness with notes of strawberries, raspberries, milk chocolate, a hint of tar and some attractive kirsch touches. There is good focus here, length and fine silky tannins on the finish, which lingers well. Love it. Eight to ten years.''
90 Point Rated - Marcus Ellis Halliday Wine Companion
''There feels like a lightening of touch here. The fruit intensity and alcohol remain, but there’s a greater purity, a revelling in the red fruits, musk and rose notes, absent real confection, also some red licorice, raspberry and kirsch qualities. Tannins still have a drying quality, a little less of the fine, sandy grip from skins alone, but there’s a lot of fruit to shepherd, and it achieves that.''
