Tasting Notes:

The d'Arenberg d'Arry's Original McLaren Vale Grenache Shiraz 2021 is a celebrated Rhône-style blend named in honour of third-generation winemaker Francis "d'Arry" Osborn, recognising his lifelong contribution to Australian wine. Produced by one of Australia's First Families of Wine and a 5 Red Star James Halliday-rated winery, this iconic blend continues to showcase the elegance and vibrancy of McLaren Vale.

A 50/50 blend of Grenache and Shiraz, the wine is crafted using traditional open fermentation, basket pressing and maturation in a combination of new and seasoned French oak before bottling without fining or filtration. Aromas of wild red berries, dark cherry and exotic spice lead into a medium-bodied palate layered with wild strawberry, dried cranberry and rhubarb. Subtle dried herbs and baking spice add complexity, while fine, velvety tannins and bright natural acidity carry the wine through to a long, savoury finish.

Awarded 94 Points by Jeremy Oliver, 93 Points by Ray Jordan (Wine Pilot), 93 Points by Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front) and 90 Points by Huon Hooke (The Real Review), this versatile red is an outstanding match for slow-roasted lamb, chargrilled sausages, duck, mushroom dishes or Mediterranean cuisine. Elegant, fragrant and beautifully balanced, d'Arry's Original 2021 is a timeless McLaren Vale classic.

Accolades & Awards:

94 Point Rated - Jeremy Oliver Wine Critic

''A stunning move towards a finer, more Rhoney and grenache-driven expression of this wine, sporting artful balance and texture. Deeply floral and spicy, laced with blackberries, cranberries, blueberries and dark plums, it reveals notes of licorice, smoked meats and cracked pepper. Supported by a fine, drying, crunchy spine, it's medium in weight, delivering a fine length of pristine black and blue fruits, finishing with a refreshing acidity and savoury aspects. Astonishing for its price.''

93 Point Rated - Ray Jordan Wine Pilot

''A mighty good year is perfectly reflected in this famous wine, a tribute over many years to one of the real characters of the wine industry. It’s a tried-and-true blend from McLaren Vale offering generous plush red fruit flavours with a slightly dusty dried herb influence offsetting. There is plenty of density in the middle palate which carries effortlessly to a sustained finish.''

93 Point Rated - Campbell Mattinson The Wine Front

''I always look forward to tasting d’Arry’s Original Grenache Shiraz, though I don’t much love typing the word d’Arry’s. This edition presents a sweet ball of raspberried fruit, clear and simple, with dried herb notes as an afterthought and an obvious stream of citrussy, almost apple-like acidity running throughout. It’s a simple drink for sure, but there’s an attractive floral aspect to the fruit, as well as a velvety aspect to the texture, or there is until the finish, where it gets a bit more rugged. This drinks pretty well, all things told.''

90 Point Rated - Huon Hooke The Real Review

"Deep, bright red-purple colour with an intense dark-fruit aroma laced with a lift of volatile acidity, or possibly just alcohol. There's vanilla and chocolate, too, while the mouth-feel is dense and rich, the tannins ample if not exactly refined. A massive amount of red wine for the price."

Marcus Ellis - James Halliday Wine Companion

''Arguably, the emblematic wine from the vast portfolio at this address. This iteration is softly fruited, supple and sweetly rendered, carrying a rich swell of raspberry compote, liqueur cherry, salted licorice and ferrous notes. The palate is open, with short but firm tannins and dried herbal notes adding a savoury sting to the tail.''

Ken Gargett - Wine Pilot

"Surely one of Australia’s most recognisable wines, the team use five tonne headed down open fermenters in order to look after the wine in small batches. Basket pressing to a mix of new and older French oak barriques follows, with the barrel ferments ageing on lees. Shiraz dominates the blend but the grapes intertwine superbly. An earthy and even slightly rustic style here, no doubt it will be as instantly popular as previous vintages. Burly and full of flavour, there are notes of cherries and chocolate, with blackfruits, game, soy and licorice. The wine is of decent length and exhibits plenty of tannins. This will offer pleasure for at least a decade."
