The Shanahans If Forever Exists Barossa Valley Shiraz 2022 is a rare and powerful single-vineyard expression sourced from a small Marananga site on the western edge of the Barossa, where vines planted in 1900 continue to produce fruit of extraordinary intensity and purity. Hand-picked due to their age and exceptional quality, the grapes were meticulously hand-sorted and transferred to a small concrete fermenter, where they were pumped over two to three times daily for seven days to build colour, structure and aromatic depth. The skins were then loaded by shovel into a basket press and gently pressed for nearly 24 hours, capturing the full essence of these ancient vines before the wine completed malolactic fermentation and began its long maturation. Aged for two years in a mix of American and French puncheons with submerged bungs and bottled without fining or filtration, this release was further matured in bottle to ensure harmony, polish and seamless integration.
In the glass, the wine shows a deep purple-black core with a crimson edge. The nose is intensely perfumed, delivering waves of blackberry, dark cherries, cassis and exotic spice, expanding into savoury notes of black olive, ironstone and finely layered oak. The palate is concentrated yet remarkably plush, where saturated black fruit merges with spice, dark chocolate and black forest cake richness. The acidity is beautifully aligned with the high-quality oak tannin, driving a long, spicy finish with a final whisper of oak that reinforces the wine’s stature and completeness. The result is an epic, small-batch Barossa Shiraz of remarkable depth and poise, celebrated with 97 Points & 5 Stars from Sam Kim, 95 Points Top Rank from Huon Hooke, 95 Points from Andrew Caillard and Ken Gargett, and 94 Points from Erin Larkin for Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate—a collection of accolades confirming both pedigree and rarity.
This commanding style pairs perfectly with slow-braised beef ribs, chargrilled rib-eye steak, venison backstrap, mushroom and truffle pie, pepper-crusted lamb rump, or rich dark-chocolate desserts. Its complexity and structure also make it an extraordinary cellaring candidate for those seeking to witness the evolution of great Barossa Shiraz.

“Sumptuous and graceful, it's seductively expressed on the nose, showing blackberry, bouquet garni, cured meat, star anise, and toasty oak characters. The concentrated palate exhibits multi-layered mouthfeel and plush texture, superbly structured by layers of fine, chalky tannins. A magnificent rendition, offering extraordinary richness, refinement, and a captivating finish. At its best: now to 2042. $130.00. www.shanahanswines.com.au. April 2025.”
95 Point Rated - Huon Hooke The Real Review Top Rank
“Deep dense red-purple in the glass; the bouquet sweet and floral, with hints of white grapes, spicy, lifted and whole-bunchy. Fleshy palate with stacks of sweet fruit swaddled in powdery tannins, blackberry and dark plum, concentrated fruit running the show with oak very nicely balanced. Sumptuous shiraz.”
95 Point Rated - Andrew Caillard & Ken Gargett The Vintage Wine Journal
“From the famed Marananga sub-region, this has been bottled under Diam. Dark maroon hue, this is powerful and intense with notes of black fruits, mocha, espresso, axle grease, liquorice, coffee beans, cloves and plums, with the plums really shining on the palate. The wine has impressive length and fine, lingering tannins with a sleek and appealing texture. The intensity never wavers. Ideally, leave this for four to five years and then enjoy for the following fifteen. Drink 2030–2045.”
95 Point Rated & 5 Stars - Russell Gallagher Vinomasters
"Deep garnet with impressive colour saturation and youthful density. The aromatic profile is brooding and layered, revealing blackberry, black plum and cassis interwoven with dark cocoa, liquorice root and finely ground spice. The palate is commanding and architecturally structured, delivering dense black fruit concentration supported by firmly sculpted tannins of impressive grain and authority. Acidity threads cleanly beneath the fruit weight, providing vertical lift and precision. Mid-palate expansion reveals layers of dark chocolate, spice and savoury mineral nuance, while oak is seamlessly absorbed into the wine’s structural framework. The finish is exceptionally long, tightening gradually with fine phenolic grip and poised tension.Monumental structure and ageing pedigree. Cellar to 2043."
94 Point Rated – Erin Larkin Robert Parker Wine Advocate
“The 2022 If Forever Exists nails the terroir of the Barossa. Here we can see the dusty earth notes from the ironstone-rich soils, the ripeness from the sun and the intensity of the old vines, which were over 100 years old at the time of harvest. This has notes of raspberry, dark chocolate, roasted meat juices, tarragon notes and mahogany, and there's a dusty/woody overtone to the aromas. This is both perfumed and powerful, with a tension through the middle palate and finish that feels mineral in its pull and detail. Whether there has been a change to the élevage from the last time this cuvée was tasted, or whether the fruit grown in this vintage is better adapted to the existing program, there is certainly far greater balance and harmony here than has previously been noted. Bravo. 15% alcohol, sealed under Diam and wax.”
