Tasting Notes:

The Henschke Keyneton Euphonium Shiraz Cabernet 2022 is a masterful composition of old-vine Shiraz blended with Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot, sourced from select vineyards across the Eden and Barossa Valleys. Named in honour of the Henschke Family Brass Band, founded in 1888, the wine pays tribute to heritage, craftsmanship, and community spirit, much like the euphonium itself, whose restored 19th-century German-made instrument remains in the family’s care.

The 2022 season delivered challenges of frost, hail, and rain, but the resulting low yields produced fruit of exceptional quality. The final blend of 59% Shiraz, 33% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Cabernet Franc and 2% Merlot was matured for 20 months in a combination of 20% new French oak hogsheads and seasoned French and American oak, showcasing both power and finesse.

In the glass, it shines a deep crimson with ruby highlights. The bouquet brims with raspberry, blackberry, and black plum, lifted by violet and almond blossom. Subtle bay leaf, vanilla pod, and black pepper add savoury intrigue. On the palate, concentrated dark forest fruits are layered with baking spices, sage, and Dutch cocoa, carried by vibrant acidity and fine-grained tannins that stretch into an exceptional, persistent finish. With 25+ years of cellaring potential, this wine is both a tribute to history and a benchmark of modern Australian winemaking.

Critically acclaimed with 96 points from Ken Gargett (Winepilot) and JamesSuckling.com, plus 95 points from Huon Hooke (The Real Review) and Ray Jordan (Winepilot), this is a vintage of remarkable elegance and longevity.

Accolades & Awards:

96 Point Rated - Ken Gargett Winepilot

"A vibrant dark maroon hue, the nose exhibits notes of coffee beans, mocha, kirsch, tobacco leaves, bergamot, cassis, cold tea and licorice... Balanced, focused, fresh and energetic, there are silky tannins and momentous length."

96 Point Rated - James Suckling

"Deeply perfumed and spicy... aromas of blackcurrants, roasted coffee beans, cedar, blood plums... a velvety texture, fine-grained tannins and bright acidity... lingering flavors of bitter chocolate, mulberries, cigar box and paprika."

95 Point Rated - Huon Hooke The Real Review

"Good depth of ruby to garnet colour... vanilla, chocolate, raspberry... a fruit-sweet middle which smacks of crushed raspberries, then a supple tannin finish."

95 Point Rated - Ray Jordan Winepilot

"Bright, plummy, raspberry-like fruit... medium bodied and elegantly structured, displaying a vibrant fruit energy and purity supported by fine chalky tannins."

94 Point Rated - Jeni Port Wine Pilot

"In challenging vintages like 2022, the art of the blender is highlighted, indeed, it deserves to be celebrated. Relying on one grape variety can be tricky when the weather turns cool and wet, but four? That’s a safe winemaking insurance policy. With Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot sourced from across the Barossa Valley (40%) and Eden Valley (60%), Euphonium delivers a most fulfilling wine. Offers a smooth, textural glide with lively dark red fruits and lifted woody spices coming into play. Remains true to the Euphonium style with its elegance and its almost joyous delivery of herbs and spice: crushed sage and thyme, pepper and baking spices. The use of American and French oak, which delivers noteworthy tannin drive and grip, is also noted."

94 Point Rated - Dave Brookes Halliday Wine Companion

"The 2022 release smells plummy and expressive with layers of spice, dried herbs, sage, bay leaf, blackberry pastille, tobacco leaf olive tapenade and earth. Some lovely nutty oak tones roll through on the palate, which shows wonderfully pure black fruits, fine, silty tannins and a vibrant line."
