Tasting Notes:

Niche Grenache 2021

Bright magenta colour. Ripe raspberries with plum fruit and floral notes on the nose. The palage is filled with flavours of raspberry and plum fruits, with hints of white pepper and spicy cloves for an earthy finish.

Normans Holbrooks Road Grenache 2021

Medium bodied wine which is fruit driven on the nose with raspberry and dark plum notes. The palate reflects the nose with ripe raspberry, plum and some floral notes. Hints of white pepper and spicy cloves provide an earthy finish to this moorish wine.

Viking Grand Barossa Valley GSM 2020

Deep purple in colour, with blackberry, plum and a burst of red cherry, accompanied by spice and white pepper aromas. The palate is a wonderful combination of red fruits and savoury undertones. Smooth tanins make for easy drinking with a soft lingering finish.

Kilikanoon Duke Reserve Clare Valley Grenache 2018

Bright, rich red with a ruby hue tautology. Ripe red fruits and white plum and underpinned by savoury forest fruits notes. Dark and plush forest fruit lies at the core of this wine. Silken tannin sgently coat the palate and linger on the finish, in tune with the persistent flavours of raspberry compote and subtle oak. The balance of crisp acidity and natural tannin produces a medium bodied wine that retains a firm structure that will continue to develop complexity with time.

The fruit sourced for this grenache came from a selected grower in the Riverland region of South Australia.

Normans Holbrooks Road Grenache 2021

In 1853 when Jesse Norman purchased seven hectares of land on which he planted vines. A winery was later established at Holbrooks Road as his winemaking business expanded. This win pays tribute to Jesse's foresight and belief in Australia's wine industry.

Viking Grand Barossa Valley GSM 2020

The grapes are picked and delivered to the winery and gently worked through the de-stemmer before being transferred to an open fermenter. The juice is pumped over daily to extract as much concentrated fruit as possible for a week period before draining and being basket pressed. The skins are then gently pressed for approximately 24 hours. After the wine has completed its malolactic ferment, it is matured in new and seasoned American oak barrels prior to bottling with minimal fining and filtration.

Kilikanoon Duke Reserve Clare Valley Grenache 2018

Very much a sentimental favourite, the Duke is carefully blended from two single Grenache vineyards in Watervale, aged 72 and 78 years respectively. Both vineyards dry farmed, hand pruned and hand harvested.

"This is a wine which has everything going for it – and it delivers accordingly. Picked from two discrete old vine Grenache vineyards in the Watervale sub-region – aged 74 and 80 years – which are dry-farmed, hand-pruned and hand-picked. The parcels are selected “for power and elegance”. Winemaking sees the use of small open fermenters and an extended period on skins. Basket pressing into older French oak of varying formats for fifteen months.

A deep crimson red with spices, hints of chocolate, tobacco leaf, rose petals, black fruits, cherries and leather on the nose. There is complexity here, good intensity and yet the balance is retained. A silky texture through to velvety tannins. Good length. This is delicious now but will easily impress over the next decade. A cracking Grenache."

"From experience, this wine looks far better on day two. Today, the 2018 Duke Reserve Grenache is plush and vibrant, but the tannic framework in the mouth serves to create a shell around the fruit, when what we really want it to do is to crack open and reveal what it's got. This is dense and weighty in terms of fruit character: blood plum, mulberry, star anise, rendered lamb fat and strawberry top. There is a delicious cherry character that rolls through the finish. A lot to like here."
