The Penfolds Great Grandfather Rare Tawny represents the pinnacle of Penfolds’ fortified winemaking, delivering unmatched age, complexity and finesse. Sourced from the sixth stage of the Grandfather Solera alongside select individual batches identified for their extraordinary quality, this remarkable tawny is further matured before being blended into the Great Grandfather Solera. With a minimum blended age of 30 years, it captures the ultimate expression of Penfolds’ fortified mastery.
Crafted in the Barossa Valley from a core selection of classic tawny varieties—Mataro, Shiraz, Cabernet and Grenache—this release draws upon a vintage span from 1960 through 2002, a 42-year history seamlessly interwoven to balance richness with freshness. The first 20 years of its journey are spent in the Grandfather Solera, with further ageing in seasoned oak hogsheads before entering the multi-stage Great Grandfather Solera, ensuring depth, consistency, and exceptional refinement.
In the glass, the wine gleams a lustrous deep tawny with a distinctive yellow-green rim, signalling its maturity. Aromas are intense and seductive—toffee, praline, quince paste, fig, raisin, candied peel, roasted nuts and dark chocolate intertwine with orange zest and marzipan. On the palate, it is seamless and layered, flowing with dark fruitcake, coffee, milk and dark chocolate, brûlée sugar and aniseed, all supported by a perfectly poised balance of spirit, acid and fruit richness. The finish is long, persistent, and endlessly complex—a rare fortified of extraordinary pedigree.
A true collector’s piece, the Great Grandfather Rare Tawny is a testament to Penfolds’ 180-year heritage, making it one of Australia’s most iconic and luxurious fortified wines.
98 Points - James Halliday Halliday Wine Companion
"Bottle no. 0807 of 4200 from the Series 16 selection. Light golden brown; arguably the best of all Australian tawnies, with more luscious fruit than Seppelt DP90 (the other contender); luscious it may be, but it is also wonderfully elegant, with rancio and Christmas cake and toffee flavours on the mid-palate, moving to a spicy, dry and ultimately fresh finish."
96 Points - Joe Czerwinski Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
"The 30 year old Penfolds Great Grandfather Rare Tawny is pale tawny in color and has a more profound nose than the Grandfather or Father labels of this style. The nose presents some earthy notes that wrap a complex spiciness around a core of Christmas cake, dried fruits, milk chocolate and incense. It’s a huge wine in the mouth - very serious stuff - with tons of layers and racy acid line to carry the flavor through the very long finish that also has a pleasant minerality."
96 Point Rated Huon Hooke The Real Review
"Medium-deep tawny-amber hue and a superb bouquet of burnished timber, walnuts, raisins and other dried fruits, with a tinge of toffee. A magical bouquet. The palate is intense and piercing, powerful and yet focused and elegant. Toffee, vanilla, caramel flavours abound, and the sweetness is controlled, not overpowering. Elegant and long, a stylish wine in a drier style than the typical Australian tawny"
