Tasting Notes:

The d’Arenberg The Stump Jump McLaren Vale Shiraz 2021 is a vibrant and characterful expression of McLaren Vale, combining regional heritage, thoughtful winemaking and outstanding drinkability in one beautifully balanced release.

Named after the famous stump jump plough and presented in its distinctive eye-chart label — a playful nod to both history and enjoyment — this wine reflects the ingenuity and resilience that define the region. The 2021 growing season delivered excellent natural balance, with healthy winter rains, steady spring growth and a mild, dry autumn allowing fruit to ripen evenly and develop purity and depth.

Sourced largely from very old bush vines, the grapes were gently crushed, traditionally fermented in open tanks, basket pressed and carefully matured in oak before bottling to preserve freshness and varietal integrity. In the glass, it shows a deep crimson hue with vibrant highlights, opening with fragrant aromas of raspberry, strawberry, mulberry and warm spice layered over subtle earthy undertones. The palate is juicy and silkily textured, flowing with flavours of blackberry, cherry, wild strawberry and ripe mulberry, supported by bright natural acidity and supple, finely tuned tannins that create an effortless sense of balance.

As the wine unfolds, its pure fruit core and gentle savoury complexity carry through to a smooth, velvety finish that lingers with impressive finesse. Renowned for delivering exceptional value, this release offers remarkable quality for everyday enjoyment while still reflecting the depth and personality of old-vine McLaren Vale Shiraz. It pairs beautifully with barbecued lamb, grilled sausages, woodfired pizza, slow-roasted chicken, beef burgers or mushroom-based dishes, making it a versatile choice for relaxed dining and entertaining. Drinking superbly now, the 2021 Stump Jump Shiraz showcases d’Arenberg’s trademark blend of tradition, innovation and accessibility in a wine that is both generous and refined.

Accolades & Awards:

91 Point Rated - Sam Kim Wine Orbit
"It's attractively ripe and fragrant on the nose, showing dark berry, thyme, game and almond notes, leading to a fruit-expressive palate offering supple texture backed by fine-grained tannins. At its best: now to 2027"

Stuart Knox - The Real Review
"Deep ruby red hue. Blueberry, chocolate and dried herb aromatics. Big and boisterous, lashings of fruit and sweet spices bounce across the palate while equally exuberant tannins grip it. Decent length and definitely dry at the warming finish."

Bob Campbell - The Real Review
"Rich, fleshy red with cassis, dark chocolate, and liquorice flavours. A warming, generous wine that is accessible now but should develop well in the next few years."
