The Yering Station Reserve Yarra Valley Shiraz Viognier 2017 is the epitome of exceptional winemaking, showcasing the best of both variety and terroir. Made only in the finest years, this flagship Shiraz Viognier represents the purest form of the winery’s vision. The 2017 vintage is a rare one-in-20 season in the Yarra Valley, where optimal growing conditions led to perfectly balanced vines and beautifully ripened fruit. The result is a wine of remarkable intensity, power, and longevity—qualities that are the hallmark of Yering Station's flagship releases.
Sourced from the Coldstream vineyard, with a small portion from a premier site, the Shiraz and Viognier were co-fermented in open-top fermenters, with 100% whole berries undergoing a cold soak for five days. The wine was gently hand plunged twice a day before being pressed to French oak barriques for 18 months of maturation. This careful, traditional winemaking method allows the fruit to shine, revealing a deep, dark red rose color.
On the nose and palate, the 2017 Reserve Shiraz Viognier offers intensity with rich plum, black cherry, and anise spice notes, beautifully complemented by a hint of French oak. The wine’s complexity continues with dark chocolate, earthy spices, and an explosion of black fruits on the mid-palate. The fine, super-grain tannins provide a silky texture, while the balance and structure of the wine are both ethereal and elegant. It’s a wine that will continue to evolve, making it perfect for collectors or those looking to experience a truly exceptional example of Australian Shiraz.
Rated 97 points by Huon Hooke of The Real Review and 96 points by James Halliday Wine Companion, this is one of the finest Shiraz Viogniers to come from the Yarra Valley. It represents the pinnacle of Yering Station’s winemaking expertise and a testament to their dedication to quality since 1988.
Pair this flagship wine with slow-cooked lamb, roasted game birds, or a rich, aged cheddar. Its depth and complexity make it an ideal choice for sophisticated dishes that highlight its elegant structure and powerful flavors.
96 Point Rated - James Halliday Wine Companion
"There is slightly less than 2% co-fermented Viognier, but it plays an important role in creating the highly fragrant and expressive bouquet. Yes, it's vintage driven with a riot of red and purple fruits, but the perfect structure and balance goes way beyond normal wines."
97 Point Rated - Huon Hooke The Real Review
"Deep, dark, bold red/purple colour; concentrated. The bouquet is dusty, five-spicy and charming, with sweet nutmeg overtones, and a sprinkling of charred oak. The tannins are fine and firm, elegantly-sculpted and the palate is tense, concentrated and very persistent. A classy wine of great elegance and age-worthiness."
93 Point Rated - Nick Stock jamessuckling.com
"So complex and refined with intense plum and mulberry aromas and flavours, framed in spice, pepper and caramelized, meaty notes. The dusty tannin texture is alluring. Good length, too."
