Tasting Notes:

Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon 2023 reflects the drive, passion and lifelong determination of this winemaker to produce the quintessential Coonawarra Cabernet. Sourced from the famed terra rossa soils and crafted by the sixth-generation family-owned winery whose legacy dates back to 1852, the fruit from the 2023 vintage was fermented on skins and pumped over twice daily to ensure maximum extraction of colour and flavour. The wine was pressed while still slightly sweet and transferred to a mix of new and seasoned oak barrels to complete both primary and malolactic fermentation, before being racked and returned to refreshed fine-grained French oak for 18 months of maturation, with 30% new wood contributing polish, structure and aromatic lift.

Bright red fruit—classic to Coonawarra—bursts from the glass, with red berries, cassis and lifted florals supported by subtle notes of cedar, graphite and refined oak spice. The palate delivers depth and elegance, with beautifully layered Cabernet structure, smooth tannins and a persistent, savoury finish that reinforces both pedigree and craftsmanship. The continuing quality trajectory of this flagship release is underscored by its 96-Point rating from Russ Gallagher at Vino Masters, following the legacy of the previous vintage, itself three-time 96-Point rated, confirming the consistency and prestige of the wine and the family behind it.

Its varietal purity and refined structure make it a natural match for chargrilled rib-eye, rosemary lamb cutlets, venison, slow-braised beef cheek, truffle mash, gourmet burgers or matured cheddar. Enjoy now for its expressive fruit and perfume, or cellar confidently to watch complexity deepen further with time.

Accolades & Awards:

96 Point Rated - Russ Gallagher Vino Masters

"A deeply coloured Cabernet with saturated crimson hues, showing the hallmark elegance and power of Coonawarra. The nose is alluring and explosive with layers of blackcurrant, mulberry, and red cherry gliding alongside notes of cedar, dried tobacco, and gentle oak spice. Very impressive! The palate is finely structured and beautifully balanced. Supple yet firm tannins frame a core of vibrant dark fruits, with fresh acidity giving precision and length. Hints of bay leaf, mocha, and spice provide regional complexity. The finish is long, persistent, and beautifully poised.  A classic expression of Coonawarra Cabernet with modern refinement. Drink: Now to 2034."

96 Point Rated - Ray Jordan Wine Pilot

"This is Coonawarra cabernet through and through. When it gets things right, Coonawarra's cabernets are quite marvelous, and this one shows the elegance and refinement, together with the deep regional intensity that marks quality Coonawarra cabernets. It's bright and vibrant, and beautifully presented. Aromas of black currant, light cedar. And a palate that delivers with great control and precise focus through to a long finish. The weave of fine chalky tannins and neatly applied oak with the intense fruit is nigh on perfect. These wines have a remarkable capacity to age over many years."

94 Point Rated - Wine Pilot

"A wine reflecting the much missed Jim Brand’s pursuit of great Cabernet from the Coonawarra region and a very fine tribute.  A gleaming dark crimson/magenta hue, the nose opens with cigar box and black cherry notes, along with aromas of charcuterie, coffee beans, blackberries and tobacco leaves. There is excellent oak integration here, good concentration throughout and a lingering finish. A juicy style with sleek tannins, this will drink impressively for the next ten to twelve years."

95 Point Rated - Q Wine

"This 2023 is a graceful beauty to behold. Cassis, juicy blackberries and earthy notes are in full cry as I swirl the glass. It's a wine with a softly, softly approach without bludgeoning you with ripe fruit or high alcohol. Pizza sauce and dried herbs continue to reveal the savoury nuances that make this Cabernet so appealing. Puffs of earthiness and shards of dark chocolate add detail and delight as French oak imparts char and vanilla characters. The dusty tannins, although firm on opening, demonstrate some flex and agility and I'm all here for that. Their shape and presence elevate the wine. The structure and balance demonstrate that this is built for the long haul, and I have no doubt that those tannins will melt into the frame with ease. An excellent Coonawarra Cabernet!"
