Savoury, meaty notes. Shows some wonderful herbal lifted tones on the nose. Blue fruit becomes obvious as the wine opens up. Palate is soft and alluring, with a luscious mouth-feel, blueberry and talc. Tannins dominate, a brilliant long acid palate carries the fruit and flavour profile for a wonderful length.
Overlooking the Campaspe River valley, visitors to Redesdale Estate Vineyard will enjoy the views and Mediterranean style gardens of this quaint restored bluestone dairy. Redesdale Estate’s vineyards are among the oldest in the cool climate southern part of the Heathcote wine region and are grown on old volcanic sendimentary rock and soils.
This rich soil contributes greatly to the intensity and varietal purity of their wines. Planted in 1982, all of Redesdale Estate’s grapes were once sold to a contract winemaker. It wasn’t until 1999 that the winery began producing their own wines. The 1999 Redesdale Estate Shiraz was the first vintage to be labelled under the Redesdale Estate label and was the first of many fine red wines made by their winemaker.
Producing estate grown red wines, Redesdale Estate handpicks their grapes with care. This ensures each bunch is in optimal condition when they begin the winemaking process. The wines are aged in new and one-year-old French oak, and further aged for two years in the bottle. The result is award winning wines that show great elegance.
95 Points - Huon Hooke The Real Review
"Deep, bold red colour with a good purple tint, showing slow rate of ageing. Rich, ripe aromas of chocolate and cocoa powder, background toasty roasted meat undertones, the palate full-bodied and rich, powerful and deeply-flavoured, with abundant tannins which are softening nicely. Dried herb nuances persist. It's drinking well now and has many years in front of it. There are still blackberry and dark plum fruit flavours aplenty."
94 Points - James Halliday Wine Companion
"Bright colour, a strong minerally character envelops dark fruits, sage and a touch of blueberry, medium bodied with vibrant acidity, well defined dark fruit and a little bay leaf on the palate; long, fine and supple on the finish.
Ben Edwards
"Youthful in colour, and exuberant on the bouquet, combining black and red fruits, geranium, sage and a touch of crushed bracken; the palate is lively with focused acidity providing drive to the ample fruits on offer; fine lingering tannins complete picture with a long, succulent and surprisingly unevolved conclusion."
Jancis Robinson
"Spicy with lots of acidity and lots of mineral, the minerals shown on the label perhaps? Pretty good and racy and well balanced, though seriously mineral!"
