Tasting Notes:

The Mud House Claim 431 Central Otago Pinot Noir 2023 is a pure expression of its origin, sourced exclusively from the acclaimed Claim 431 Vineyard in the Bendigo sub-region of Central Otago. Planted on free-draining loam soils layered over schist gravel, the site produces fruit of exceptional concentration and structure, further elevated by the huge diurnal temperature swings that define the region. A portion of the wine was matured in French oak barriques for subtle spice and texture, while the balance remained in stainless steel to protect the vibrancy and purity of the fruit.

In the glass, the wine immediately impresses with aromas of fresh cherry, wild red berries and a touch of baking spice, supported by delicate earthy nuances true to Central Otago. The palate is beautifully composed, delivering ripe red fruit interwoven with sweet dried herbs, savoury oak hints and a refined mineral edge. Elegant tannins and bright acidity propel the long, focused finish, highlighting the balance and finesse that earned the wine 94 Points and 5 Stars from Sam Kim at Wine Orbit, along with a heritage of strong results including a Gold Medal and 5 Stars from Raymond Chan for previous vintages. This single-vineyard release stands as a benchmark example of modern Central Otago Pinot Noir—vibrant, textural and deeply expressive.

Its aromatic lift and fine structure make it an ideal partner for dishes such as duck breast with cherry glaze, grilled lamb fillets, mushroom and thyme risotto, venison carpaccio, charcuterie, truffle brie or roasted beetroot salad. Drink now for its fresh, energetic fruit, or cellar medium-term to reveal deeper spice, earth and savoury dimensions.

Accolades & Awards:

94 Point Rated & 5 Stars - Sam Kim Wine Orbit

"Charming and delightfully expressed with dark plum, game, toasted spice and cedar notes, it's beautifully weighted on the palate delivering plump mouthfeel combined with silky texture and grainy tannins. Firmly structured with a persistent, engaging finish. At its best: now to 2030. www.mudhouse.co.nz. April 2024."
