The d'Arenberg Footbolt McLaren Vale Shiraz 2022 is a rich, full-flavoured Shiraz named after Footbolt, the champion racehorse owned by Joseph Osborn before he famously sold his stable in 1912 to purchase the d'Arenberg estate. Today, this family-owned winery remains one of Australia's First Families of Wine and a prestigious 5 Red Star James Halliday-rated winery, producing some of McLaren Vale's most iconic wines.
Crafted from small-batch ferments before maturation in a combination of new and seasoned French oak barriques, the wine is bottled without fining or filtration to preserve its purity and complexity. The bouquet reveals lifted aromas of dark cherry, black plum and Dutch liquorice, while the palate is rich and generous with layers of blackberry, black plum, mocha, black pepper and subtle spice. Ripe tannins and balanced natural acidity create a smooth, powerful finish with excellent ageing potential.
Awarded 92 Points by Ken Gargett (Wine Pilot) and 90 Points by Aaron Brasher (The Real Review), this classic McLaren Vale Shiraz is a superb match for grilled rib-eye steak, slow-roasted lamb, beef brisket or mature cheddar. Bold, beautifully balanced and unmistakably McLaren Vale, the d'Arenberg Footbolt Shiraz 2022 is drinking superbly now and will continue to reward careful cellaring.
92 Point Rated - Ken Gargett Wine Pilot
"The team keep the batches for this wine separate until blending. Traditional foot treading is used 2/3rds of the way through fermentation, followed by basket pressing. Maturation is in a mix of new and older French and American oak barriques. The colour here is a vibrant crimson magenta, made in an earthy style with notes of plums, red fruits, bay leaves, chocolate, animal fur and cloves. The wine is of medium length with juicy acidity running the length. It provides attractive drinking and lingers pleasantly with fine, satiny tannins on the finish. Easy drinking, this is a crowd pleaser and will remain so for the next six to ten years."
90 Point Rated - Aaron Brasher The Real Review
"Dark and inky in the glass. Opulent aromas of plum, mulberry, anise, graphite and spice. Chewy, dark fruited and mouth-filling, with plenty of plush fruit all being shaped up by some rather dry and grippy tannins. Needs some protein"
Marcus Ellis - James Halliday Wine Companion
"A foundational house wine, both for d’Arenberg and many a loyalist drawn to its old-school trappings and affordability. Dark fruits, bitter chocolate and mint. It’s ferrous, with scrub and saltbush moving into development with a cassis note, the palate plush, acidity on the citric side."
