Yalumba The Signature Cabernet Shiraz 2023 is a classic expression of one of Australia’s most celebrated red wine blends, bringing together premium Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz from carefully selected Barossa Valley vineyards. A cool, mild growing season allowed the grapes to ripen slowly, developing pristine fruit flavours, excellent concentration and beautiful natural acidity.
The Cabernet Sauvignon was sourced from three Barossa Valley vineyards, contributing the lifted aromatics and structured palate for which The Signature is renowned. The Shiraz also comes from three vineyards of varying ages, including vines planted as far back as 1935, adding richness, depth and layers of complexity to the final blend.
Stunning scarlet red with a vibrant crimson hue, the wine opens with blackcurrant, dark chocolate, black cherry and olive tapenade, followed by floral notes, sage and liquorice as it develops in the glass. The palate is stylish and beautifully structured, with layers of blue fruits, coffee and spice carried by long, flowing tannins through an elegant and persistent finish. Its pedigree is reinforced by four outstanding 96 Point ratings from Dave Brookes for the Halliday Wine Companion, Huon Hooke and Stuart Knox for The Real Review, and Ken Gargett for Wine Pilot.
96 Point Rated - Dave Brookes Halliday Wine Companion
"Yalumba's iconic blend sees 55/45% cabernet sauvignon/shiraz with the '23 release. Again, the release impresses with its fruit purity, elegance and cellaring potential. Deep blackberry, satsuma plum and black cherry fruit with underlying layers of brown spice, cedar, tobacco, pencil case, roast meats, dried herbs and black olive tapenade. Beautifully composed on the palate with a firm yet kinetic, fine-grained tannin structure, lacy acidity and a finish that sails on gracefully for ages. A cracking release."
96 Point Rated - Huon Hooke The Real Review
"Very deep red-purple colour with a nose of talcy sandalwood, crushed leaves and stalks, a little tomato leaf and this translates to a slightly stalky bitterness on the finish. This could be a little confronting at present for those with a low bitterness threshhold, unless consumed with protein, and it begs to be cellared. It's certainly intense and concentrated, and has excellent cellar potential."

"We might be yet to learn who is to be honoured with the 2023 Signature, but whomsoever it is should be well pleased. This is a cracking release, one of their best. An opaque centre with a dark maroon rim, there is still vanillin oak evident on the nose, but it is integrating well. The aromas include notes of dried herbs, black fruits, graphite, licorice, mocha, chocolate, plums and cassis. This is balanced, youthful, offering real persistence and coiled power. The palate sees the move to gorgeous chocolate notes. A wine with serious length, there is much to love here."
96 Point Rated - Stuart Knox The Real Review
"Opaque core leading into a deep purple rim. Blackberry, tobacco leaf, graphite and violets leap from the glass. Wonderful density of black and blue fruits creates a base upon which layers of savoury complexity are built. Graphite and tobacco leaf sit at the fore, then notes of cedar and anise shine through. Wrapped in firm but well integrated tannins that provide ample tension and drive, ensuring a long finish that is focused and precise. Many years ahead of this wine."
95 Point Rated - Campbell Mattinson
"This is a particularly good example of why cabernet and shiraz go so well together. Apart from structure and flesh, the combination of dark and red berry flavours, fruit sweetness and leafy herb notes, are just so complementary. This wine is the perfect exhibit: the fruit is fresh and flavoursome at once, not to mention of noteworthy purity. There’s cedarwood oak here too, but its integration is entire, and it has latched on to nuances of tobacco. Yalumba’s Signature pretty much never misses, and this release certainly hasn’t. Fruit, tannin, length and all-round harmony; all are in top nick."
94 Point Rated - Tom Kline Wine Pilot
"The quintessential Australian blend shows its worth nicely here. Plum, redcurrant, sandalwood, black pepper and blackberry lead the charge. With air, graphite and bay leaf emerge, along with black olive and allusions of grilled meat. The palate is full-bodied but still lifted and somewhat cool in feel. Meat, black olive, plum, dried herbs, blackberry and sandalwood again. There’s some mintiness to the acidity and lovely architectural structure through the finish. A strong 2023 release, and one that will do well with eight years or more in the cellar."
92 Point Rated - Angus Hughson Wine Pilot
"The cooler 2023 vintage has crafted a more supple, elegant and early drinking vintage of this Australian classic. There's a charming opening of cherry compote and black currant, with touches of dried herbs and old leather. With a fleshy open-knit style, this mid-weight wine is nicely balanced as black currant and black olive flavors are well-matched to al dente tannins over a fine finish of reasonable length. A tough vintage handled well."
