The Colonial Estate Mungo Park Single Vineyard Old Vine Barossa Valley Shiraz 2023 is a powerful, site-driven expression from the revered Moppa sub-region, neighbouring the legendary Kalimna Vineyard — widely regarded as the spiritual home of Australia’s most iconic Shiraz, Grange. Sourced from vines up to 80 years old and cropped to less than 3.5 tonnes per acre through careful green harvesting, this single vineyard release captures remarkable concentration and purity. The fruit is hand-picked at dawn and fermented in small open-top fermenters before completing malolactic fermentation and maturing in French oak barrels, crafting a wine of depth, structure and complexity.
In the glass, it reveals a dark red to maroon core with opaque purple flashes at the rim. The nose is intensely aromatic and layered, offering blackberry, mulberry and plum intertwined with dark chocolate, olive, earth and subtle oak spice. On the palate, super ripe blackberry and spicy plum drive the flavour profile, supported by dark chocolate richness and a peppery edge. Juicy dark tannins provide structure and length, while natural fruit acidity adds vibrancy and balance. The finish is long and persistent, with perfectly integrated oak allowing the vineyard’s fruit intensity and savoury complexity to shine.
Previous vintages have received outstanding acclaim, including 95 Points and a Gold Medal from Wine Showcase Magazine, 95 Points and 5 Stars from Sam Kim (Wine Orbit), and 95 Points from James Halliday, confirming the pedigree and consistency of this distinguished Barossa single vineyard Shiraz.
This bold, cellar-worthy Shiraz pairs beautifully with chargrilled wagyu, slow-braised beef cheeks, rosemary lamb shoulder or rich game dishes. Decanting for an hour or two in its youth allows the wine to fully open and reveal its layered complexity, while careful cellaring will reward patience as it evolves gracefully.
